Spain, the mother colony decided in 1878 to connect by submarine cable the Philippine islands with the universal trans-Atlantic cable system to accelerate commerce and communication between her colonies and other European countries.       The trans-Atlantic cable linked Ireland in Europe and Newfoundland in North America in 1866 after three unsuccessful attempts in 1857, 1858 and 1865. It shrank the world through instant communication, revolutionized oceanography because of the groundbreaking work in marine research, and proved that it could be both an instrument of war ...
