The other day, my friend Kiko asked me “Coi, naa ka diri ugma”? (Coi, are you going to be here tomorrow?). “Uhuh, ngano?” (Yes. Why?) I replied. “Naa man gu’y urban challenge ugma. Basi gusto ka mag picture. Diri man gud ang isa ka challenge sa race.” (There will be an urban challenge tomorrow. I was thinking, maybe you want to take pictures. One of the challenges in the race will be held here. ). “Ah, ok. Sige lang, basi madala nako akong cam ugma”. (Oh yes, maybe I can bring my cam tomorrow).
The next morning, I was able to bring my camera after getting it from my bro’s office. It was 2:30 p.m. already when I was on the way to Kiko’s house. I was riding a jeepney. As we passed by Bankerohan Bridge, I saw a girl jogging as if she was going after something or someone. Suddenly, a sweaty man leaped from the side of the jeepney and I realized he’s a teammate of that girl. They’re the participants of the urban race.

As I enter the compound where Kiko’s place is located, I saw 3 flags formed in a straight line. I also saw Kiko, his wife’s son, Bams, and a couple of kids waiting for the participants to arrive. I also saw Smooch wearing a T-shirt of the said event. I wonder what her participation in the event.. hmm.. By the way guys, I want you to meet Smooch…

… a 2 year old Great Dane. Here she is with Strawberry.

The task is that you will Walk with Smooch in a zigzag form passing through those flags. Easy isn’t? You bet!

Now here are the participants doing the task..

I don't know what the guys are thinking here.. hehe.
Here's Puff (Left) and Sniff (Right).

Is it an addiction? Or is it normal? Is it a warning sign? Or is it just a passing phase? I think, it is a bordering addiction.

Oh, I don’t mean you, obviously. But you know what? I’ve just uncovered around 10 blogs I created since 2004. There could be more, but I cannot be so sure. Some of these I uncovered by Googling my name, pen name, nick name, and all the names I remember calling myself. Some of these blogs have little to no content, and some have a couple months of content.

Despite this discovery, I still created 3 new blogs in the past 4 days. Yipee! Oh no, I refuse to disclose the URLs of the blogs I created in the past, nor the URLs of the newly created ones. In time, I will, so sit back and enjoy the ride.

I did cancel one though. I closed the blog I made last month which was a health blog. Why? Pretty much because I no longer have time or the patience to focus on health. Things just got a lot busier and now I am strapped for time. No worries, though, because I still have a healthy nutty bone in me which is pushing me to be healthy. But any update on that will most definitely be read here.

Speaking of health, I was supposed to jog this morning, but I skipped out. Why? Too tired. Ask me again in a couple of days, and I’ll tell you.

So… latez!

Didn’t have much time to sit and ruminate under the shade of the old acacia trees because we had Maia the whirling dervish with us, but we did get to walk both the outer and inner circles of the concentric cemetery. And take pictures.

This is the marker that was erected where our National Hero Jose Rizal was first buried after his execution at Bagumbayan Field. If you check out the wikipedia entry on the Paco Park you will see that the photo on that page is of the wrong marker.

I have Googled for every possible spelling for the first word: beatiaorium, beatiaortum, beatiaortura — it may even be in Latin. What it means is something that escapes me right now, as much as the name John immediately under that word.

The Nokia N81 8GB is a smartphone with a mix of impressive features… and rather disappointing disadvantages. There’s the obvious advantage of having built-in 8 gigabytes of memory space for applications, games, music, videos, photos, what have you. Some mobile-phone critics have complained about the lack of an expansion slot for more memory, but 8 gigs should be pretty spacious for most people’s needs.

The N81 is a dual-camera 3G phone, but does not have support for HSDPA, which has been available for sometime now. It does, however, let you access the Internet via wifi, so that probably makes up for it. Accessing via wifi in various hotspots -– whether open networks or WEP-enabled secure networks -– didn’t give me any problems, except that websites loaded rather slowly at first. The built-in Web browser is user friendly, though, and looks nice on the 2.4” 16-million-color QVGA display.

As a prolific blogger, I could appreciate the N81 for its Internet capabilities, but then there are the downsides. First off, the keypad is way too small for me. The middle keys are OK, providing good feedback. But the keys on the bottom edge are difficult to use -– my finger keeps slipping!

Perhaps this handset was designed primarily for music and gaming, rather than for serious data input. At the bottom of the screen, where they phone-specific keys are located, there are extra buttons for music: play/pause, forward, rewind and stop. In fact, whatever you’re doing with the phone, you can play music with just a keystroke.

Another downside that I find very surprising is the camera. It’s only at 2 megapixels, and it’s not even a Carl Zeiss lens. Plus, the photos are grainy! No matter that the light is adequate, it can’t seem to take decent photos. Video is even worse.

But if we talk about music, that’s a whole different story on the N81! This handset has full stereo capability, having a speaker on each side of the rather thick body. The output is astonishingly powerful and will certainly delight any music lover who’s in the market for a portable and feature-packed phone-cum-player. And with 8GB, the N81 can store hours and hours of music.

Speaking of hours, the battery is one huge plus factor. Based on my near-abusive usage of the test unit, the N81 lasted two whole days before it bothered to ask me for a recharge. I had wifi turned on for several hours, was listening to music tracks, and texting people left and right during that time. I also had Bluetooth running so that I could listen on the Nokia BH-604 Bluetooth headset.

The BH-604 is an awesome headset! It’s a full stereo system that lets you enjoy music like you were in a concert hall, and it’s totally compatible with the N81.

If you value being constantly in touch with your online contacts, the N81 offers good value. With its wifi connectivity and large memory, you can download a whole range of Internet applications, on top of the pre-installed email and Web programs. I use the Nimbuzz client, which lets me connect to Google Talk, Yahoo! Messenger, Skype, ICQ, etc. all at the same time.

The N81 is also supposedly a gaming console, since it’s Nokia’s effort in promoting N-gage, its gaming platform. But at the retail price of around P17,200, and if you’re in it for the games, you’d probably be better off with a PSP.

One other thing I appreciate in this phone is its content search program. It has a built-in search facility for virtually anything that’s inside the phone’s memory. Search for a keyword, and the program returns results from all over the place, including SMS messages. And the search speed is pretty decent, too.

On the whole, it’s an affordable phone with powerful features. The disappointments could be overlooked, especially if you’re a mobile and music addict.

From various hypotheses of silly judgments on speculating this and that to lunch-time propers in order to eradicate the silence that was shrouding almost everyone, all of us fellows in the Dumaguete workshop eventually understood each other’s special eccentricities—like all the dregs of a tea drink had finally settled. Listening to literary icons such as Edith Lopez Tiempo, Rowena Tiempo-Torrevillas, Myrna Peña-Reyes, Cesar Ruiz Aquino, and Butch Macansantos for full five straight days was a bit strenuous so off we hit the road towards Lake Balinsasayao (sans Lambert, Dustin, and Neslie) to, in some ways, reflect on our literary boogers. I wonder what will happen tomorrow. Till here, bye!

_____________________________________________________________
