How to Get your PageRank Back?
Monday, February 4th, 2008BerryBlitz asked how to get back his PR2 (his blog now has PR0). Apparently, he is one of the millions affected by the PR backlash as punishment by Google on paid links.
Well, here’s a tip for those who were affected by PR drop:
I was Stumbling a while ago when I found this timely and interesting post from Yaro Starak of Entrepreneurs Journey, one of the successful netrepreneurs and probloggers, on how he has managed to get his page rank back to 6. When the big sweep happened, his blog went down to 3 from his original PR6.
Good for him he has now managed to get back his page rank. He added no follow to all paid links in his blog, then submitted a review request with Google at their Webmaster Tools then patiently waited for Google to give him his original PR. According to him, “Google simply doesn’t tell you whether you have successfully adhered to their requests or you still need to do more to have the penalty removed.”
I was also affected by this PR drop so I might also need to do some cleaning up. Right now, I am making every effort to get my PR back to 4:
1. I removed my LinkWorth Linkads script.
2. I removed my TLA plugin.
3. I am posting more regularly to get more traffic and subscribers.
4. I am exchanging links with relevant blogs.
5. I will also be putting nofollow in all the paid links in this blog. I was a member of BlogToProfit previously but fortunately I backed out because I couldn’t keep up with the deadlines.

Am I ready to dump my TextLinkAds account?
Thursday, January 31st, 2008Text Link Ads (TLA) has helped me a lot on my hosting and domain dues and other online transactions. Adding funds to Paypal was still not possible in the Philippines so my TLA payments are what I use to pay my hosting and domain. I don’t have a credit card (except for my mom’s GSIS e-card) so I have to depend on my Paypal balance to pay for these things.
I was earning at least $100/month with TLA and the links to this blog generate most of my earnings (>60%). For a starter in blog monetization, 100 bucks really mean a huge amount. However, after reading some of Google PR drops and sites getting banned from Google results because of paid links, I had to reconsider things.
John Chow’s blog for example was number 1 in Google results for “make money online” keywords but now it’s nowhere to be found. Some bloggers however, like Darren Rowse of Problogger.net suggested to “Forget About Page Rank and Build a Better Blog” and further emphasized that it’s the quality of content that gives you traffic and that relying in Google is a bad move. Dosh Dosh also stated that Google PR are just numbers and a “webmaster fetish”, i However, for a struggling blogger who’s still building a traffic like me, the searches from Google and other search engines really matter a lot.
Eighty-eight percent (88%) of my blog traffic comes from Google searches, this could mean that a large percentage of my Google Adsense earnings come from it.
Everyday, I try to check for the indexed pages for this blog. I get paranoid every time I see the number of indexed pages drop day-by-day. So I had to think things over. Sure, I am earning $100 from TLA, but I am earning more from Google Adsense. The latter entirely depends on the traffic generated from Google searches. So I had to choose one over the other. After few months of deciding and considering all the risks, I have decided to remove my Text Link Ads script (plugin). I also see some probloggers pulling out their TLA scripts, so why shouldn’t I?
My other blog (The Health Blog) however, is earning from TLA until now. So I could not entirely answer “no!” to my own question. I am only ready to give up 60% of my TLA earning and not 100% entirely.

Entrecard Credits: The Virtual Money of the Blogosphere
Monday, January 21st, 2008Entrecard credits these days should be dubbed as the “virtual money” of the blogosphere. It is now possible to do online transactions without the need to spend real money, using Entrecard credits. With this possibility, users are also exploring new ways on how to earn more credits.
If you visit the Entrecard Shop, you’ll find great ways to spend your ecs:
- For Advertising: You can buy an ad space or text, a blog review, and directory submission.
- Buy Products and Services: Buy an e-book, pay and buy a web space, a blog installation, graphic design, CDs and DVDs, comments for your blog (yeah, even this), search engine optimization, etc.
Of course we know that we can buy ad space on different blogs through browsing the directory. To buy all these products, you have to have enough credits. We already know the conventional ways to earn credits: by dropping and receiving drop cards from others, every time someone advertises in our widgets and receiving donations from others.
Then ideas on earning more ECs started to come out such as selling products and services and joining several contests.
And the latest, auctioning your ECs. Yes, this is possible.
Yesterday, I signed up my health blog, and was immediately made an offer: bid for 250 ECs at Ebay. Another great idea, I should say.

I’m switching to a magazine-style WordPress theme!
Friday, December 21st, 2007Using magazine-style WordPress themes is the new trend in the blogging community. These themes enhances the CMS capability of WordPress.
Why is it better to choose a magazine- or newspaper-style theme?
1. It’s “pro-looking”. One of the ways to drive traffic and persuade readers is making your layout professional. Because these themes can be taking a lot of knowledge about coding, most of them are designed by professional designers.
2. You can maximize the space on your blog. You have a lot of space for advertising and other widgets.
3. It is best for multimedia. Magazine-style themes are best for video blogging and podcasting.
4. You can have featured posts highlighting a certain notable post.
Here are some of the best-looking magazine-style themes available for you!
1. Structure
A theme for news/magazine sites with a blog-friendly option too. It includes built-in video and image features that easily allow you to customize your site. There are content blocks that you can place virtually anywhere on the page.
2. Mimbo is a magazine-style Wordpress theme which makes extensive use of WP’s template tag system to create a non-traditional layout. It contains no images and only minimal CSS styling. Mainly it exists as a clean, grid-based starter layout for designers to install and style to their own liking.
3. Visionary. A theme for news/magazine sites. It includes built-in video features that easily allow you to add videos to your site.
4. Jello Wala Mello WordPress Theme is a news / magazine-styled WordPress theme created for multi-media sites. It requires WordPress 2.3 to work properly.

Firefox 3.0 First Beta is already available for download!
Saturday, November 24th, 2007Mozilla has released the new and improved Firefox 3 on its beta version. How will Firefox 3 improve on things?
- Performance improvements, including over 300 memory leak fixes, perennial problems with Firefox since the beginning and an issue that plagues it badly today
- Firefox 3 does seem quite a bit speedier than version 2.
- With its intuitive search, users can auto-scour their surfing and browsing history and bookmarks for visited URLs and even page titles, making it easier to find “lost” pages as you type.
- Bookmarking is easier to do (just one click) and organization of bookmarks is also improved.
- Security improvements
- Several other features found on their development blog.
Firefox 3 Beta 1 is freely available for download, it’s not recommended for general users at this time. There are still plenty of bugs in the system, some pages won’t render right, and, most importantly, very few Firefox 2 add-ins work with Firefox 3 at all (not even toolbars).

I am now on a paid host!
Saturday, November 24th, 2007My domain and other sites, has been hosted since its birth in the blogosphere by Ejam Hosting through its post-to-host program for FREE.
I have been satisfied with their hosting because I am getting the features of a paid host for FREE and so far, Ejam has satisfied my qualifications for a free host. Unfortunately (or fortunately), since this blog has been widely visited these past days, I have to upgrade my bandwidth limit and storage capacity.
Although I was satisfied with the hosting, my fear of losing my website was still there. Because it’s a free hosting, I was afraid of instability in the future. I’ve experienced this dilemma with my previous free hosts. AhPlace, my first host, for example, has been one of the most-trusted free hosts but due to hacker attacks, click frauds, spammers, and several other instabilities, it has to close down losing all the data of its hosted members. I still highly recommend Ejam, though.
Some free hosts are only supported by members donation and the activity of its members, so financial instability can be a problem in the future. This was the reason why I shifted to a paid host. I was thankful that Paypal is now available with full feature (send and receive) in the Philippines that I can pay for the hosting.
Webhosting Buzz is now my host under their Budget Hosting Silver Plan. I didn’t have a problem with the transfer because their ever supportive and reliable team did it for me - the backups, the transfer and everything. I also got one domain for free as long as my site is kept hosted by them.
This is now my second day under their server. So far I am satisfied with the uptime and support.

Free professional themes for your WordPress blogs
Sunday, June 3rd, 2007My own list of most beautiful and best WordPress themes, inspired by the 83 Beautiful Wordpress Themes You (Probably) Haven’t Seen list by Smashing Magazine.
Dark Theme for WordPress was originally used on Wolfgang Bartelme’s website. It is a three-column, dark theme which is be perfect for community, technology and even personal blogs. I am not a fan of dark-themed layouts for blogs but this particular theme has struck my interest. It’s neatly done and it maximizes your website space, which means you’ll have more space for site ads, links and widgets.
The theme has been tested on WordPress 2.1.3 with Firefox and Safari, may play well with IE6/7 too. It validates as XHTML 1.0 Strict and CSS 2.0.
Bartelme Design had made available a customization kit for download, which will enable users to add a nifty logo for their blogs. The kit includes a PSD file and a short description of how to change the CSS accordingly.

Redoable 1.2 is another dark theme for WordPress. Dean Robinson, the theme’s author, built the theme upon the popular K2 code, but a lot of things has been changed and removed for this theme. It has 20 modules available to use, all you need to do is download the plugins supported by this theme.

BlueDark 1.0 is a three-column, widget-ready theme from AskGraphics.com. Just add your own header image to make it look more professional.

View other themes by Ask Graphics at the WordPress Theme Viewer.
The Fashion Blog themes from Ask Graphics are perfect for feminine, fashion and lifestyle blogs.

iTheme WordPress Theme from N. Design Studio is designed for the Mac lovers with a truly customizable sidebar. Visitors can rearrange the sidebars by the drag & drop Javascript.

N.Design Studio is also the author for GlossyBlue, another high-tech glossy Mac style theme with Web 2 Mini icons, perfect Web 2.0 or technology related blog.

Free Professional Themes from TemplateXtreme.com. These themes are Google Adsense-ready and mostly are perfect for your business websites.

Salmon 1.1 by Justin Shattuck was called so because its pink and blue color tones.

GrayYel is a two-column Wordpress theme with Gray and Yellow combination for that perfect web 2.0 stylish look. Gray and Yellow combination, mouse hover effects on the rss links, sidebar links, header pages make this theme very appealing. It also include category psd to make more categories in the sidebar.
