How to Prepare for the August 2007 Philippine Licensure Exam for Physicians

    Wednesday, July 25th, 2007

The August 2007 Philippine Licensure Exam for Physicians is fast approaching. How do you prepare for it? Here are few tips you can follow:

    1. Follow these tips from The House Officer’s Survival Guide: Rules, Laws, Lists and Other Medical Musings, by Lawrence Martin, M.D for It is written for doctors in training, but will also be of interest to medical students, and practicing physicians who must take recertifying exams.

    2. Get good reviewers and focus on one study material per subject area. This way, you can concentrate more and it won’t take more of your time. Of course you will still need the “big” text books for clarification of some points you can’t understand while taking the review.

    3. To attend to review center or not? Some successful passers do not advocate attending review center while others do. It would depend on the person’s preference.

    4. Follow your own schedule and not of others. If you can’t make an overnight review, then don’t. Because you might end up sleeping all day the next day. An overworked mind also fails to function sometimes. If your study hours is only 4 hours, don’t force yourself to study for longer number hours. Chances are, you will not retain most of them. If you need to extend your study time, you can slowly increase the time day by day so your body can adjust well to the new “stress.”

    5. To study alone or attend on a group study? Again this will depend on your preference. If you can function well with a group then organize a small discussion group. Some prefers to study alone so they can concentrate more with less annoyance.

    6. Do not cram!

    7. Most importantly, pray!

    Schedule for the Exam:
    Aug 4 (Saturday)
    8am-10am (Biochemistry)
    11am-1pm (Anatomy, Histology, Neuroanatomy)
    2pm-4pm (Microbiology, Parasitology)

    Aug 5 (Sunday)
    8am-10am (Physiology)
    11am-1pm (Legal Medicine, Medical Jurisprudence)
    2pm-4pm (Pathology)

    Aug 11 (Saturday)
    8am-10am (Pharmacology and Therapeutics)
    11am-1pm (Surgery, Ophthalmology, ENT)
    2pm-4pm (Internal Medicine)

    Aug 12 (Sunday)
    8am-10am (Obstetrics, Gynecology)
    11am-1pm (Pediatrics and Nutrition)
2pm-4pm (Preventive Medicine and Public Health)

Good luck to all incoming doctors!

Different Ways to Download Music Videos and Movies to Your Cellphone

    Saturday, July 21st, 2007

Do you wish to play your favorite videos in your cell phone? Here are several ways to do that.

    1. Downloading from popular video sites plus file conversion. One of the best resources to download music videos is YouTube.com. Currently direct download is not a feature, you need video downloaders to aid you. Mashable.com provided a good list of some of the video downloaders available. Highly recommended is YouTubex to do the job for me. The files downloaded are of .flv type which means it is not supported by your cellphone. Thus, you need a converter for file conversion to .3gp type. You can use Movie2x Free 3GP Converter.

A FireFox plugin, Convert & Download Youtube (Firefox) 2.0, lets you download and convert FLV to 3gp and other supported file types for FREE. Download your favorite video directly from YouTube and convert to your mobile phone with one mouse click.

After you have converted the files, you can now upload your .3gp video file format into your cellphone.

    2. Through Google Search. Downloading plus conversion take time but TechRecipes provided a technique using Google Search with no P2P or torrents required.

    3. Through direct downloading into your cellphone.
    e-How.com
provided tips on how to directly download YouTube videos to your cellphone without using any software or media converter.

    4. Through using software that directly converts videos to cellphone- or iPod-friendly file types. Lenogo Youtube Video to iPod Transfer 2.0 enables users to transfer any YouTube or Google Video straight to their iPods or cellphones. Browse internet videos and the program will start downloading your desired movies and converting them to an iPod-friendly or cellphone-supported types format automatically. This is a shareware which means that the software is free during the 30-day trial period and you have to purchase after to continue using it.

    5. Through directly downloading your uploaded videos. Mixxer, now called 3Guppies, lets you upload videos (file types supported are flv, asf, wmv, avi, mov, mp4, mpg, qt, 3gp) from your desktop. They will be formatted for your cell phone and you will be sent a download link. Then automatically download it through your phone. However, this program does not support all countries.

    Videos: Different graphical multiplication tricks

    Monday, July 16th, 2007

…for beginners?! Aside from the classical method of multiplication, there are interesting ways to solve a multiplication problem.

    The Easy Mental Trick

The Graphical Method with the aid of circles and grid lines

    Lattice Multiplication

It is a method of multiplying large numbers using a grid. This method breaks the multiplication process into smaller steps, which some students find easier. Digits to be carried are written within the grid, making them harder to miss. For explanation of the video, please click here.

These methods, except for the Lattice Method, are not yet proven accurate, thus, it is still recommended that you use the traditional way of solving your multiplication problems.

Safety Tip: Switch off your iPod during thunderstorms

    Saturday, July 14th, 2007

Listening to your iPod during thunderstorms is really not a good idea, experts say. The reason isn’t aesthetics — it’s safety. A recent case of a 37-year-old, iPod-wearing Canadian man, who had sustained multiple injuries after a tree nearby was hit by a lightning, was described in the July 12 issue of The New England Journal of Medicine.

The patient had second-degree burns on his chest and left leg. In addition, two linear burns extended along his anterior chest and neck to the sides of his face, terminating in substantial burns in the external auditory meatus bilaterally, corresponding to the positions of his earphones at the time of the lightning strike. Both of his tympanic membranes were ruptured, and he had a severe conductive hearing deficit. He also had a mandibular fracture.

According to experts, although people may be struck directly by lightning, it is more common for the lightning to jump to a person from a nearby object, such as a tree — known as side flash phenomenon.

The skin has high resistance to electric current. Unless something interrupts the flow, the lightning is often conducted over the surface of the body - called a “flashover.”

This phenomenon didn’t happen to the patient. His iPod didn’t draw the lightning strike. But when the flashover hit the iPod resting against the man’s sweaty skin, it drew in the powerful electric current. The man was thrown approximately 8 ft (2.4 m) from the tree, which has caused an additional blunt trauma to the patient.

Although the iPod does not increase your risk being struck by a lightning, it poses another danger.

WordPress Upgrades and Problems: What should you learn

    Monday, July 9th, 2007

For several days, this blog was off line; all because of my carelessness. I tried to upgrade my WordPress installation to 2.2.1 through Fantastico, without trying it first with my test blog. The upgrade ruined everything. The pages suddenly were not accessible. I was desperately looking for ways to make this blog work again but I always failed. Fortunately, through exploring my cPanel and using several articles and help topics available on the web, I was able to find the solution to my problem. But of course, I had some lessons learned, I want to share so you can also avoid careless mistakes:

    1. Never use Fantastico in upgrading your WordPress installation. Chances are, there might be bugs or changes in the server you might be unaware of that may cause problems in the upgrade process. A manual upgrade is highly recommended.

Although Fantastico is the most convenient way to upgrade your installation through its one-click install feature, you are not assured that the installed version is working properly. To avoid this, you can create a test blog to work all your changes before applying them to your blog.

    3. Do not forget to back up your currently working database before upgrading. I am re-emphasizing it because it seems that many users forget this very important step. I take myself as a very good example.

    4. Do not immediately upgrade a working installation of WordPress to a newest released version. Chances are, some plugins might not be compatible with the latest version.

    5. Check all the possible causes of your problem before making any drastic moves such as deleting or removing your database out of frustration. Solutions are always available, you only have to find out how. Be patient. Find answers through help or support topics available on the web that may serve as your guide.

    6. Always ask help. Post a support topics at the WordPress support forums or at your web host support forums (if any). Members always have good suggestions.

Search for a board passer easily

    Sunday, June 24th, 2007

Everybody is excited to know the results for the recently held licensure examination for Philippine nurses on June 2007. But, excitement sometimes brings into frustration when you have to scroll down the roll of successful examinees, from a thousand, to look for your name.

Here are some lazy ways to easily look up a board passer:
    1. Go to your favorite search engine.
    2. Type in the name of the one you’re searching for then click enter
    3. You’re done. If you see your name, it means celebration. :D

If it turns out the other way around, don’t lose hope yet, you can confirm it through scroll over the list of examinees. Who knows, search engines might have missed your name. :D

15 Ways to Make Your Food Safer

    Friday, June 22nd, 2007

WebMD lists 15 ways to make your foods safer:

    1. Consider your source. Eating locally grown food is becoming more popular, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s safer than supermarket produce.

    2. Map your supermarket route. Don’t cruise the store aisles aimlessly. Gather nonperishable items first, fresh or frozen goods last. That strategy minimizes the time that perishable goods sit in your shopping cart instead of in a freezer or refrigerator.

    3. Be choosy. Select fresh produce that isn’t bruised or damaged. Check that eggs aren’t cracked. Look for a clean meat or fish counter and a clean salad bar. Don’t buy bulging or dented cans, cracked jars, or jars with loose or bulging lids. If fresh-cut produce (such as half a watermelon or bagged salad mixes) is on your shopping list, choose those that are refrigerated or surrounded by ice.

    4. Pack it up. At the grocery store, bag fresh fruits and vegetables separately from meat, poultry, and seafood products.

Bring an ice chest to keep frozen or perishable items if it will take more than an hour to get those items home.

No ice chest? If it’s hot outside, put the groceries in the air-conditioned passenger area of your car instead of putting them in the trunk, which may not have air-conditioning.

    5. Keep your kitchen clean. Wash your cutting boards, countertops, refrigerator, pots, and utensils regularly in hot, soapy water, especially after they’ve been in contact with raw meat, poultry, and seafood.

    6. Check your cutting boards. They shouldn’t have lots of cracks and crevices where bacteria can lurk.

    7. Sanitize. The FDA recommends periodically sanitizing your cutting boards, countertops, and kitchen sink drain with a homemade mixture of one teaspoon of chlorine bleach to one quart of water.

Sponges and dishcloths can house bacteria, so wash them weekly in hot water in the washing machine.

    8. Store your food properly. Refrigerate frozen and perishable items as soon as possible.

Don’t store foods near household chemicals or cleaning products. Some produce — like onions and potatoes — don’t need to go in the refrigerator, but don’t store them under the sink, where they could be damaged by leaky pipes.

    9. Check the refrigerator and freezer temperature. Set the refrigerator temperature to 40 degrees Fahrenheit, set the freezer to zero degrees Fahrenheit.

Use a refrigerator thermometer to check those temperatures periodically.

    10. Wash your hands. Before you handle food, lather up with soap and hot water, washing your hands for at least 20 seconds. Repeat after handling produce, meat, poultry, seafood, or eggs.

    11. Wash fruits and vegetables in running water. A small scrub brush may help, but don’t use soap or other detergents to wash produce.

What about produce washes? “All of these solutions and washes may have some applications but studies show that washing with water is as safe as anything else,” says Pillai, who calls water the “most effective, the safest, and the cheapest” way to wash produce.

    12. Thaw foods in the refrigerator, not on the countertop. It may take longer, but it’s safer.

    13. Cook foods thoroughly. Use a meat thermometer to make sure meat is fully cooked. Never put cooked meats on an unwashed plate or platter that has held raw meat.

    14. Store leftovers safely. Refrigerate leftovers in tight containers as soon as possible and use them within three days. When in doubt, throw it out.

    15. Maintain perspective. “There’s no such thing as a zero risk,” says Pillai. ”There’s no such thing as a sterile product.”

How Yogurt is used in Acne Treatment

    Friday, June 22nd, 2007

A reader of this blog asked,

i have pimples and a lot of marks on my face
i dont know how to get rid of the marks though
i wanted to make sure if using yoghurt is a good idea

    thanks

I didn’t actually have the idea that yogurt is used to prevent acne until this question was raised up. Doing my research, I’ve found out that there are actually yogurts especially formulated for acne treatment.

Here’s what I found out. Yogurt is a great moisturizer and helps soothe red spots and pimples! Yogurt has lactic acid which softens, and tightens the skin and refines the pores. Its high nutrient content and natural antibacterial and antifungal properties also get rid of germs and other bacteria. We know that one of the causes of acne is clogging up of dirt in your pores which serves as friendly environment for bacteria.

Dengue Cases in the Philippines surged to 6.8% - DOH

    Wednesday, June 20th, 2007

The Department of Health (DOH) has ordered hospitals to reactivate “Dengue Express Lanes” due to a 6.8 percent upsurge in the number of dengue cases in the country. There have been 7,361 reported dengue cases from January 1 to June 2, 2007, compared to just 6,695 cases during the same period last year. 73 people have already died of dengue in the past five months.

To make the matter worse, Dr. Eric Tayag, the director of the DOH-National Epidemiology Center, dengue fever has become “hyper endemic” which means it’s already too late for efforts to reduce the number of cases to its previous level.

This is because all four strains of the dengue causing virus are active and are being spread by the mosquito aedes aegypti at the same time; unlike last year, when only one strain of the virus was being spread.

Global warming was also said to be one of the culprits of the increase in incidence.

Warmer temperatures caused by global warming make mosquitoes more hungry for blood and therefore bite people more often in order to feed. Blood makes the mosquito to lay eggs more often thus [there is an] increase in mosquito population. This increased feeding, in turn, completes and perpetuates a deadly cycle: more eggs laid results in more mosquitoes being born, which grow into more carriers of the deadly dengue virus strains.

Further, with four strains of the dengue virus as potential agents of infection, a person can become ill with dengue as many as four times. This is because a person only gains immunity from one strain of the virus at a time. Moreover, subsequent dengue infections following the first would be more serious for the person getting the disease.

    Prevention

The DOH advised the public to strictly observe measures in its nationwide anti-dengue campaign. The anti-dengue campaign is now a year-round concern, since dengue cases are now reported during the wet and dry seasons.

The measures in the anti-dengue campaign include the following four “S-es”:

Seek and destroy mosquito breeding places. These include all containers that collect stagnant water, like bottle caps, dish racks, cans, empty bottles and used tires.

    Self-protection.
This includes covering windows and doors in the house with fine-meshed screens, using mosquito nets, and rubbing insect repellent lotions or sprays onto exposed areas of one’s skin.

Seek medical treatment immediately. High fever lasting 2-7 days, rashes and/or bleeding, severe headache, pain behind the eyes, muscle, joint, or bone pain are some symptoms that could indicate dengue. The DOH advises the public to go to a Dengue Express Lane in a hospital, where proper diagnostic tests for dengue would be administered to a patient.

Say “no” to indiscriminate fogging. The DOH says that no fogging operations should be done in an area unless there are known dengue cases present.

10 Commandments for Drivers from The Vatican

    Wednesday, June 20th, 2007

The Vatican has issued a “Ten Commandments” for motorists to keep them on the road to salvation, warning drivers against the sins of road rage, abuse of alcohol or even simple rudeness.

    1. You shall not kill.

    2. The road shall be for you a means of communion between people and not of mortal harm.

    3. Courtesy, uprightness and prudence will help you deal with unforeseen events.

    4. Be charitable and help your neighbor in need, especially victims of accidents.

    5. Cars shall not be for you an expression of power and domination, and an occasion of sin.

    6. Charitably convince the young and not so young not to drive when they are not in a fitting condition to do so.

    7. Support the families of accident victims.

    8. Bring guilty motorists and their victims together, at the appropriate time, so that they can undergo the liberating experience of forgiveness.

    9. On the road, protect the more vulnerable party.

    10. Feel responsible toward others.

I think when pertaining to Filipino jeepney and taxi drivers, we could add 11th and 12th commandments (or more):

    11. Obey the rules first when you want your passengers to follow. I’ve noticed quite a number of jeepney drivers who carry signs such as “No Smoking” yet they violate it themselves.

    12. Be conscientious enough not to ask for fare exceeding the regular rates.

New Symptoms for Early Detection of Ovarian Cancer

    Wednesday, June 20th, 2007

Cancer experts have identified a set of health problems that may be symptoms of ovarian cancer, and they are urging women who have the symptoms for more than a few weeks to see their doctors.

These symptoms, which are found more common in women, include bloating, pelvic or abdominal pain, difficulty eating or feeling full quickly and feeling a frequent or urgent need to urinate A woman who has any of those problems nearly every day for more than two or three weeks is advised to see a gynecologist, especially if the symptoms are new and quite different from her usual state of health.

Although these symptoms are acknowledged as classic symptoms or urinary problems of patients with bladder infections it still makes sense to consult a doctor because bladder infections should be treated. Urinary trouble that persists despite treatment is a particular cause for concern, researchers say.

Eating in a Restaurant and Stay Healthy!

    Monday, June 18th, 2007
    healthy diet plan

    D. W. Brooks, MD wrote 25 easy & healthy tips for eating at restaurants. We are all aware that fast food and restaurant meals are rich in calories, in fact it was said that an average restaurant meal has over 1,000 calories. It’s enough to blow your diet.

Good news! You can actually continue to eat at your favorite fast food chains and restaurants without gaining any weight. Just follow these simple ways to prevent weight gain:us

    1. If you know the menu from the restaurant you’re going to, plan what you’re going to have ahead of time. This will help save you from making a last minute decision that could result in high-calorie choices.

    2. Drink at least one full-glass of water or iced tea before eating your meal. This helps your digestive process, and, because you’ll feel full sooner, you will eat less.

    3. Don’t be afraid to ask for the “senior citizen” special or kid’s-sized portions. Most restaurants will accommodate you — and often you’ll pay less as well!

    4. Order first. That way you’re much less likely to be influenced by the choices of your companions.

    5. If you’re not sure how something is prepared, don’t be afraid to ask. And if the dish is cooked in oil or butter, you can always ask if they have a “fat free” option.

    6. If everything on the menu is high in fat or calories, ask if the chef could prepare a plate of fresh fruit and vegetables. Many restaurants offer a vegetarian selection, so if you don’t see it on the menu, ask.

    7. When ordering meat or fish, ask that it be grilled or broiled, and prepared without oil or butter. (When you eat it, use lemon or herbs and spices to give it flavor rather than heavy sauces).

    8. Order an appetizer and a salad as your meal. Or a soup and salad. For dessert, choose fresh fruit.

    9. When choosing soup, remember that cream-based soups have many more calories than broth-based ones.

    10. If you’re having a full meal, split the appetizer and desert with your companion.

    11. If you decide to order pasta, tomato sauce has fewer calories than cream-based sauces, just like soup.

    12. Choose breadsticks over bread, or if you eat bread, don’t add butter. Stay away from muffins and croissants, and choose whole grain over white.

    13. Choose steamed vegetables instead of baked potatoes or other starches. Again, use lemon and herbs and spices rather than butter to flavor them with. Also consider asking for a doubles order of vegetables with your entree.

    14. Whenever possible, eat like the Europeans do, and have your biggest meal at lunchtime. Not only will you save money, but you’ll cut down on calories at the same time!

    15. Take the time to enjoy your meal. Savor the flavors and textures of your food, and enjoy the company you’re with. When you eat slowly, you give your body’s internal clock the time it needs to know when you’ve had enough. When you’re full, stop eating. Ask your server to remove your plate so you’re not tempted to keep eating while you wait for your companion to finish.

    16. Ask for salsa on your baked potatoes, rather than sour cream and butter. Not only is salsa much lower in calories, but it adds a “spicy” flavor to potatoes.

    17. Order salad dressings and sauces “on the side.” This gives you more control of how much to use. Another tip for salad dressing — rather than pouring the salad dressing on your salad, dip your fork into the dressing first, and then into the salad. You’ll get the same amount of flavor, without all the added calories!

    18. Choose brown rice over white rice (or french fries), whole grain breads and rolls over white. Not only are they lower in calories, but they are better for you.

    19. Stay away from “all you can eat” buffets and salad bars. It’s too easy to lose track of the amount of food you’re eating, even when it is a salad. If that’s your only choice, then stay away from the pasta, marinated salads, cheeses and fruit salads with whipped cream. Stick to soups, raw vegetables and fresh fruits.

    20. Have your soup first. It will help to fill you up, and most soups have fewer calories.

    21. If you’re craving something sweet, and don’t want fresh fruit, choose sorbet. If you absolutely HAVE to have the chocolate sauce, use the same trick as you did with the salad dressing — dip your fork into it first, then your dessert.

    22. Split your dessert with your companion. You’ll still feel like you got to be indulgent, and you’ll only have to exercise half as long to burn off the extra calories!

    23. When ordering sandwiches, order them with mustard only, rather than mayonnaise. Not only does mustard have almost no calories, but you won’t miss the mayo!

    24. If the portion you were served is large, only eat half of it. Take the other half home. Not only will you get two meals for the price of one, but you’ll cut the calories in half as well!

    25. Go for a walk after eating. Stroll along the beach, walk through a park, visit a zoo. You’ll burn calories and get your exercise at the same time!

    What is Acute Wiiitis?

    Sunday, June 10th, 2007

The term “wiiitis” was coined by Dr. Julio Bonis, a medical resident, after waking up one Sunday morning with intense pain in the right shoulder. He did not recall any recent injuries or trauma and had not participated in any sports or physical exercise recently. When he consulted a rheumatologist and the Patte’s test was positive, consistent with acute tendonitis isolated to the right infraspinatus.

Then he recalled his activities for the previous 24 hours and remembered that he had bought a new Nintendo Wii (pronounced “wee”) video-game system and had spent several hours playing the tennis video game.

With the Wii system, the player faces a video screen and moves a handheld controller (approximately 14.5 cm by 3.0 cm by 3.0 cm, with a weight of approximately 200 g) containing solid-state accelerometers and gyroscopes that sense three-dimensional spatial movements. In the tennis video game, the player makes the same arm movements as in a real game of tennis. If a player gets too engrossed, he may “play tennis” on the video screen for many hours. Unlike in the real sport, physical strength and endurance are not limiting factors. New England Journal of Medicine

“Wiiitis” (pronounced “wee-eye-tis”) is the latest ailment to develop from the video game era, beginning with Space Invaders’ wrist in 1981, which was caused by the repeated button mashing required by the popular arcade game. It is a variant of Nintendinitis, a disease entity which first recognized last 1990 after a Wisconsin doctor characterized the thumb soreness brought on by pushing the buttons on a controller as “Nintendinitis” after it affected a 35-year-old woman who played a Nintendo game without interruption for five hours.

The treatment consisted of ibuprofen for one week, as well as complete abstinence from playing Wii video games. The patient recovered fully.

But with the current addiction of people to Nintendo game, it is almost always impossible to abstain them from playing. Just use it moderately.

How to extend your Adobe Photoshop CS 3 trial version?

    Wednesday, May 23rd, 2007

The Adobe Photoshop CS 3 since its release on December 2006 has already reached millions of downloads. The beta version is available as a shareware, which means you have to register the software after 30 days by buying your own copy to continue using it. This poses a dilemma to photoshop users who cannot afford for a copy.

I installed my copy a month ago which expired few days ago. I’ve searched the web for cracks or serials that will permanently activate my copy but it seemed that there’s none available yet. Good thing my brother recommended a trick to extend my trial period by adjusting the date and time setting of my PC. In my case I adjust the date before the installation date when I want to use Adobe Photoshop.

This method was previously described in MyDigitalLife.
