DigitalFilipino Social Networking & eBiz Confab

socialnet-ebizconfab This 20 & 21 May 2008, a significant event geared towards the Filipino technopreneur is going to happen in Makati City — how I wish it were here in Davao instead! Janette Toral’s DigitalFilipino.com Club, collaborating with Fiera de Manila Inc, is spearheading the conduct of the much-anticipated Social Networking and eBusiness Conference Philipines 2008.

Heavily involved in community-building myself (e.g., MindanaoBloggers.com and the erstwhile IT Society of Davao), I believe I would benefit greatly from the meaty presentations and vigorous discussions that will certainly take place during the Conference.

I have had my small successes in the brave world of networking, but I have had a number of disappointments, too. That is why I’m looking forward to being able to attend this Conference in May: to learn from others. As well, I might just be able to share my experiences with the other participants. It is, after all, a social networking event, which I hope will be brimming with like-minded practitioners.

As a member of the DigitalFilipino.com Club, I’ve been on the receiving end of business deals that have helped push my career forward. It is because of that, and my trust in this organization as an initiator of purposeful educational events, that I would not want to miss the Social Networking and eBusiness Conference.

Up for grabs are invaluable sound bytes of wisdom from the likes of Giovanni Bacareza (Chikka.com), David Jones (Friendster), Jose Carlos Medina (Level-Up Games), Faith Ponte (itzamatch.com), Janette Toral herself, and quite a few more resource speakers.

The Internet of late has become an almost chaotic environment. How do you make sense of it all? If you’re a marketer and eyeing the digital medium, have you considered how best to navigate the tumultuous electronic pathways towards reaching your goals? What is Web2.0 exactly? And just how important is social networking as a marketing tool?

The event is still a month away — plenty of time to prepare for a trip to the capital. Attending the Conference is worth the investment, to be sure.

    PostonFire Is Hot!!

Published by Javi under , social networking

I've recently joined PostonFire, a social bookmarking/networking site that has all the services and features of the bigger, and more established social networking groups. And to a small blogger like me, this is a very good social networking tool that I am hoping would reap benefits for my blog.

With PostonFire a blogger can submit his post on the site where other bloggers can discover and vote if they like what is submitted. Unlike the other big networking groups where the already popular blogs dominate, PostonFire has the most breakthrough potential for the ordinary blogger.

PostonFire is still in its early stages but it is already experiencing rapid growth. For us bloggers who are waiting for the next big wave that will take our blog to whatever height we imagine, this site has the capability to take us where we want to go.

And now is the best time to join.

Pinoy United: A Social Networking Exclusive for Filipinos

Filipinos never get tired of social networks. In fact, the largest portion of the Friendster users are Filipinos. As of 2006, 5 million Filipinos have a Friendster account. But this may also include duplicate and spam accounts. My brother, who is a Friendster-junkie (and we are always argue because of it) has 3 accounts! And he spends more than 2 hours browsing photos, adding more “friends”, commenting, etc.

Recently, I stumbled upon and joined Pinoy United, a social network exclusive for Filipinos around the globe.

    What is Pinoy United?
It is the latest social networking site with Filipinos in mind. The site is based in the United Kingdom and aims to cater for Filipinos across the globe. Similar with other networking sites, members can stay in touch with their friends, connect with new friends, share photos, discover new interests and just hang out.

How does Pinoy United differ from other social networking site?
Aside from being exclusive for Filipinos, their utmost concern is their members’ safety. One can easily report abusive acts from other members.

Should you join the International Delete Your MySpace Account Day?

Mashable.com blogged about the growing disgust of a MySpace user to several anonymous friend requests, birthday notifications, etc. where he came to a point of deleting his MySpace account. He wanted to invite other users to join him on January 30, 2008, which he dubbed as the “International Delete Your MySpace Account Day.”

He stated 10 reasons that warrants MySpace account deletion:

    1. You rarely log in to Myspace except to delete spam friend requests from nude webcam girls.

    2. You spend five minutes writing a wall post only to hit an error message when you try to post it because of all the website glitches.

    3. You’re a girl who constantly gets marriage proposals from random men in the middle east.

    4. You visit someone’s Myspace profile only to suddenly have music start blasting out of your speakers. Bonus points if it happens to you while you’re at work.

Published by Jam under Blogging, Internet, social networking

A new interesting survey, published in the Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication, states that the social networking site of choice is related to a student’s race, ethnicity and parents’ education. More than 1,000 freshmen from the University of Illinois, Chicago and the results showed:

    • Caucasian students prefer Facebook.
    • Hispanic students prefer MySpace.
    • Asian and Asian-American students were more likely than others to “socialize” on Xanga and Friendster. They also used Facebook.

    Google’s OpenSocial Platform Releases

Google just announced that starting tonight, developers can start writing applications using the social API for Orkut, MySpace, Engage.com, Friendster, hi5, Hyves, imeem, LinkedIn, Ning, Oracle, Plaxo, Salesforce.com, Six Apart, Tianji, Viadeo, and XING at http://code.google.com/apis/opensocial.

    Will Facebook give in?”

After Breaking Open Facebook with Free Open Source Software, TechCrunch reports Google plans to announce an open API for social networking tomorrow. “OpenSocial is a set of three common APIs, defined by Google with input from partners, that allow developers to access core functions and information at social networks: 1) Profile Information (user data) 2) Friends Information (social graph) and 3) Activities (things that happen, News Feed type stuff)” Says Om Malik: “OpenSocial attacks Facebook where it is the weakest (and the strongest): its quintessential closed nature…Even if you take Facebook out of the equation, the task of writing and adapting widgets for the every increasing number of social platforms was going to be turn into a colossal mess.

What do you think of this new development in social networking?

The Content Is King - At Least in Web 2.0 It Is

In the position of Web 2.0 enthusiasts, the content of a page is no longer the same for everyone. Content can be generated, based on templets and user preferences. The user can form the content by his ain preference. The user is actually involved in developing much of this content – pages are editable, users lend with personal content and so on.

This method of involving the community in the development of a service or website have been referred to as "harnessing corporate intelligence" -- every user benefits from the thoughts of other users, and every user can convey his or her part to the service or merchandise he uses. This political relation of complete openness and transparence is a modern thought exercised outside Web 2.0 as well.

    Social Networking

In the first embodiments of WWW, users who were visiting a web page had no thought about each other. In Web 2.0, users interact in a very personal way. They exchange thoughts and feelings – but in many cases, they do friends and develop a particular sort of community – Associate in Nursing online community. Some web land sites (like hi5.com for instance) are dedicated to such as communities and only function as a meeting topographic point for them – but adjacent to every Web 2.0 land site have an active community of users. These users entree the web land site on a regular basis, and they play an active function in the manner the website and the community evolve.

Social Networking is, however, more than than just a clump of users who like a website. Sociable Networks include exact replications of existent societal networks, with friendly relationships and adversities, chitchats and news, community leadership and celebrities, as well as regular people. The manner information moves through societal webs is particular – and some societal networking services, like MySpace or Yahoo! 360 – go a particular environment of their own, with particular concern chances for those who seek them out.

    More Data Than Ever

According to Tim O'Reilly's position on Web 2.0, the value of the software system turns with the scale of measurement and the pizzazz of the information it assists to manage. The better a service is at organizing a big amount of information (regardless of whether it is a blog, a societal networking service like MySpace or your company's website), allowing the users speedy and punctual entree to a big amount of information and possibilities, then the more than likely that service is to be appreciated by its users.

In order for information to be organized correctly, the Web 2.0 have developed a figure of particular engineerings – like tagging – which effort to do it easier to recover and happen data. The particular characteristic of all these techniques is the fact that they try to form information at an intuitive level, based on conceptions like significance or subject rather than abstract conceptions about contents. The best illustration of this is del.icio.us, which lets indexing websites based on mindmapping-like techniques. Instead of organizing websites by descriptions, users delegate tags related to their content – tags which may depict what the website is about (music, computing machines etc.), how the content is appreciated (funny, sad, interesting etc.) Oregon whatever else traverses the user's mind. This is known as societal bookmarking

    New Way of Displaying Content

A few old age ago, the Web was really just the Web. A Web-driven mercantile was present online exclusively through their website, and for an offline-driven business, the website was often small more than than a topographic point for advertising. Web 2.0 topographic points a great importance of the web presence of a business, and adds a figure of conceptions to attach to this presence – elements like syndication, blogs and so on. These new ways of showing content supply a immense set of expressive resources. Furthermore, content tin be anything – not just text, but sound, pictures and just about anything else that can be viewed on a computer.
