Kadayawan: Indak-indak sa Kadalanan

I arrived at AVL 4:50 in the morning since our call time was 5 a.m. I wanted to sleep because I didn't get to sleep the night before. Since the people was still sleeping when I arrived.. I went to sleep also.. LOL!

When I woke up they already left for Rizal Park where the showdown for all the street dancing participants will take place. I immediately went there also to help them setup the equipments. We will be covering the street dancing showdown live, for a local cableTV station. Since our airing will be in the afternoon and I won't be able to take pictures then, I took some pictures that morning.. :D

There were a lot of photographers taking pictures that day, Pro's, tourists, and hobbyist as well.

You have to pass these warriors before you can rent the place..

The Coverage (Cheng²'s shot)

Float parade the next morning

Kadayawan 2008

It’s less than two weeks away! I hope you’ve booked your flights to Davao already.

The celebration of Davao’s beauty and bounty, Kadayawan sa Dabaw, will be different this year. For the first time, the Indak-Indak sa Dalan ("street dancing") event will be a whole-day affair that will reach into the night. Expect brilliant colors and fierce dancing from the participating groups, many of whom will be coming in from all over Mindanao.

The Pamulak Kadayawan floral parade on the 24th should be a sight to see this year as well. Lots of picturesque floats, I’m sure!

Unfortunately, I won’t be in Davao for the highlights of this year’s Kadayawan festival. (

I’ve been invited to join a media conference in Tagaytay — MediaNation 5.2 — and it’s an opportunity for me to apprise the nation’s influential journalists of what blogging and "new media" are all about.

Too bad, because I was looking forward to bringing some new blogger friends around town. The blogger behind BYAHILO will be in Davao for Kadayawan, and so will other bloggers from Metro Manila and Cebu. I guess I’ll just have to settle for meeting up with them at WordCamp in Manila this September.

By the way, one activity that I hope you’ll go and be part of is Kaan Mindanaw. It’s also called "Kaan Dawet" or "eat and sing", to put it roughly. It’s a week-long event that will be held at the Rizal Park, where restaurants and caterers from all over the city will showcase their culinary best.

Planning for Kadayawan 2008

Published by Blogie under , City News, Festivals, Kadayawan, Traditions

This morning I was at a planning session for the promotions activities of the Kadayawan sa Dabaw festival. Marco Polo’s Art Boncato invited me just this morning to be a part of this committee. It was rather sudden and spur-of-the-moment, but I gladly obliged. I wouldn’t miss the chance of helping organize Davao’s own traditional festival.

I don’t want to jump the gun on the Kadayawan organizers, so I’m not going to divulge anything before the official announcements. But I would like to mention that this year is going to be different. For one thing, the younger generation is starting to take over the reins, and we’re bringing in fresh ideas.

The changing of the guards, so to speak, will surely be evident in the way the festival will be marketed to the rest of the country, and — to a limited extent — to other countries. And hopefully, this freshness will also be apparent during the festival itself in August. Expect the unexpected!

Of course, I know that the planners won’t for a second neglect the origins of the Kadayawan. No matter how we would like to modernize the event, we mustn’t forget that it is a celebration that’s deeply rooted in our past, in our indigenous culture.

The Kadayawan (”beauty” or “goodness”) festival is historically a celebration of everything that is good about Davao. It has also been identified with the traditional symbols of our city: the famous Waling-Waling orchid, the Philippine Eagle, Mt. Apo and our fruits. This year, it is being proposed that we carry all of this under one overarching idea, that of abundance.

I just hope that those who are still the ultimate decision-makers for this event will see the sense in what the young bloods are trying to inject into the planning of this festival.

Ok. I’ll stop there. We’re supposed to have another meeting to discuss the brochures and other collateral materials, but I’m going to be in Manila for the iBlog4 Conference this Saturday. At any rate, I’m going to keep you, my dear readers, updated on the Kadayawan sa Dabaw event details.
