Calamari Most Loved By Filipinas,Hated By Americans

Published by texas_sweetie under , Food, information

I grew up and raised in a country where there is bountiful of seafoods.I love seafoods a lot that I will never get tired eating it everyday. If only I can have a chance to live in an island then I would be happy knowing that I can eat all the seafoods I want. One of them that I love best is the CALAMARI. We filipinas, love it so much, there is no doubt about that.Ask Americans if they eat it,you will get an answer of BIG NO that is for sure. They don't like it for the fact that it's kind of rubber when you chew it.BUT IT'S SO YUMMY NO MATTER WHAT THEY SAY.

Talking about CALAMARI,what is Calamari anyways?

The squid is a mollusk related to the cuttlefish and octopus. It has ten tentacles, and like its cousin, the octopus, it also has a protective mechanism which releases a dark ink into the water when it senses danger.

Squid lends itself to just about every cooking method imaginable and is often eaten raw in sushi dishes. Squid is available fresh, canned, frozen, dried and pickled.

Squid is also known as calamari, its Italian name. Since calamari seems to sound more palatable than squid, you'll most often see squid recipes listed as calamari on restaurant menus.

The answer is,it's no fun if there's no bone or shell to open the food I eat like these yummy crab legs. When choosing a place to eat,I make sure that I can have crab legs because my meal outside wouldn't be complete without it.Filipinas pretty sure will understand me why.

Rice Porridge (Pospas)

Published by texas_sweetie under , Food, baby, motherhood

In our native language,we call rice porridge as "Pospas" which is made of the basic ingredients rice and water.Today,I made some rice porridge for my baby.I make it into chicken savory flavor so she will have the appetite to eat it and slurp it just like her oatmeal cereal.

My ingredients are:chicken strips(I recycled the roasted chicken we have),green onions, rice, water and garlic.I sauteed the garlic and chicken first then pour some water into it and add the rice.Boil for 30 minutes or if desired consistency is meet and add the onions afterwards.

It sure taste so good that my baby likes it very much.I think I'm going to switch from oatmeal cereal to just porridge for her.

New career path for me?

Published by ZJ under , All things Khmer, Cambodia life, Food

Since I've already resigned from work, I am now at home 24/7. Compared with before when I was working and traveling almost every month for stretches of days, I now have all the time in the world to pursue other things; like doing the shopping at the local markets and cooking, for example.

Shopping at the local markets has become a routine for me and it is one chore that I love doing. I'm not kidding. There's so much happening at the market, varieties of colors, noises, and the odours - aromatic or otherwise - that I find delightful to find myself in, despite the heat. For me, if you want to discover insights into the Khmer way of life, you need to go and explore the markets. You won't be disappointed.

The very first recipe that I made was green mango salad, a hands-down favorite of my husband. Cambodia is abundantly blessed with several varieties of mango - and they are available almost year-round. When ripe, a mango is yellow, sweet and juicy and eaten as dessert. An unripe mango is green, sour and tangy, and is usually prepared as salad or served as an appetizer. Here's a photo of the green mango salad I prepared:

mango salad
Photo borrowed from www.fudtrips.blogspot.com

With the help of the kind vegetable sellers at Bouengkengkang market, I was able to buy the right kind of ingredients - mangos, shallots, chilli, fish sauce (patis), lime juice, dried shrimps (hebi), dried fish, mint and another herb that I have forgotten the name of. With all these ingredients mixed together, it has vibrant colors, as vibrant as its sweet, sour, and spicy taste. Best eaten as appetizer.

With the success of my green mango salad, I am seriously considering taking up cooking lessons offered by one of the local restaurants here in PP. With this, plus the free tips and advice from ming neak leuk (aunty veggie sellers), how could I go wrong? Who knows, this might be a new career path for me?

My Polvoron

Published by texas_sweetie under , Food

I just grabbed this polvoron at HK Market when I first saw it.From the name alone,I can tell it's from the Philippines so undoubtedly I grabbed it. I was kinda hesitant to get 2 packs of it too because the taste might be different.

When I tasted it,it is what I expected and so I regret that I only got one. I know it's gonna take sometime before we can go back to Arlington and shop for my foods for it is quite a drive from where we live.

Birthday Week

Published by Gail T. under , 101/1001, Family, Food, pictured

I'm certainly pissed off. My long and complete draft of this entry disappeared because Firefox decided to close before Blogger could aut0-save. And before I could select everything and copy to my clipboard. Stupid.

Well, the pictures are up, but I'm not about to re-write what I had written to recap my week. My mother and I (and her sister, too) share the same birthday week, which makes it a long week.

Mama and I went up to the Space Needle for the first time. The views were breathtaking, and my pictures don't do it justice. I don't know how to "open the f-stop," like my cousin suggested, so I have blurry pics of Alaska at the top. Item #37 of my 101/1001 list, check.

For my birthday, my 4-year-old cousin gave me a surprise mango milkshare with sago. Yummy, and even yummier when shared. :D She finished almost half of it, though.

Saturday of the birthday week marked the first year anniversary of our girls night out tradition. I picked Ka Won Restaurant in Lynwood because I had heard it serves samgyeopsal (삼겹살). You know, those grilled thin slices of pork wrapped in lettuce leaves. I see those in Korean dramas, and we wanted to try them.

We ordered the grill combo #2 and extra samgyeopsal. (Click on picture to read what was included in the combo.) Since we didn't order any alcohol, our server gave us extra meat. Everything was completely yummy and filling. The banchan dishes were numerous and delicious. The servers were attentive.

I definitely recommend the restaurant for those who want to try Korean food. Call ahead to reserve. As we were leaving, there were several groups of people waiting to be seated.

Korean food always leaves us longing for dessert. And we are always surprised that we are not bloated but instead have room for more food.

For 2007, we had been going to The Cheesecake Factory. But after our last visit, when we were served cheesecake without silverware, we weren't going back. We went to Applebee's instead, where some of us had triple chocolate meltdowns (yum!), apple pies, milkshakes and margaritas. I decided to try the maple butter blondie. The nuts were perfect. Just heavenly. I am looking forward to dessert time spent at Applebee's this year.

Finding that we still have time, we watched a movie at home (1408). I slept through it, though. Call me a coward, but I can't handle the aftereffects of a horror movie. I am not like some people who can promptly forget the images. I have an overactive imagination, and I refuse to get creeped out for the rest of the year.

Someone noticed that we've been spending 3-5 hours each time the cousins (girls) go out, and still it feels so short. Maybe in the coming years, we'll have to block out our entire day. We imagine we'll still do this after the youngest of our cousins join and even after we have our own families. :D

***
Cousin 1, talking about her co-workers deciding on where to eat for lunch: How about Korean, guys?
Cousin 2, slightly distracted while driving: Korean guys? I discovered them while watching dramas!

The Perfect Cheesecake

Published by Likke under , Food, goal setting, quest, random

Once upon a time, there was a programmer who dreamed of making the perfect cheesecake. How it all started was because she bought a block of cream cheese at the supermarket. Curious at what a cream cheese is, she decided it was the right time to add it up to the grocery amidst the scornful look of the budget officer (the husband). >_< The rest was a symphony pounding, peeling, mixing, tasting..

#98, my first attempt at 비빔밥

Published by Gail T. under , 101/1001, Food, pictured

bibimbap with seasoned gochujang
Originally uploaded by gail-T
I had some left-over rice, scrambled egg, boiled mung bean sprouts, sautéed zucchini and carrots, pan-fried ground beef and roasted sesame in my bibimbap. I even made seasoned gochujang from someone's recipe. It had sugar, vinegar and water in it. While I like the consistency, I didn't like the sourness. Next time, I will not use vinegar.

My first time at bibimbap wasn't as yummy as I wanted it to be. :( But I'll try again some other time.

I got a souvenir for my troubles. I got an owwie on my left pointer finger. Now, it's hard to type. Boo.

Photo Hunt #22: Candy

ampao
Photo borrowed from my other blog.

This is my favorite childhood treat, ampao, or rice crispies, in the Philippines. When I was a kid in the province, we seldom eat chocolates (they are expensive). Chocolates and other candies are a rare treat, and we usually have them only on Christmas, birthdays and other special occassions. Rice crispies, however, are our everyday treat. They are sweet and crunchy, sometimes sprinkled with peanuts and most of all, very affordable. It is rectangular in shape and because it is quite thick, one has to open its mouth wider than usual to have a bite of it.

Paella in Valencia!

Published by ivanhenares under , Food, Spain

Where else to have paella other than in Valencia where it's from! That's right, paella is a Valencian rice dish which is quite popular here in the Philippines. They say the traditional Valencian paella is not made with pollo (chicken) but with conejo (rabbit). Yes, you read right, rabbit!

We were looking for a great value restaurant to savor paella in Valencia since it's quite pricey given that rice here is expensive. And we finally found our restaurant called NECO Buffet de Cocina Mediterranea. Not only did they have two kinds of paella served in humongous paelleras in their buffet. They had a host of other Mediterranean dishes and desserts as well, all for the price of 10€, not bad given that in most restaurants, paella could go as much as 15 to 20€. And that's just one serving! So the buffet was a great deal.

Have you tasted Filipinos?

Published by ivanhenares under , Food, Spain

It was amusing to find out that in Spain, there is a commercial brand of biscuits called Filipinos! The standard Filipinos biscuit is ring-shaped and coated in either white, milk or dark chocolate. It is said that the biscuits were inspired by the rosquillos of Iloilo and Negros hence the name Filipinos. Its manufacturer added a twist by coating it with different kinds of chocolate.

They also sell Filipinos Agujeros or the holes of the biscuits coated in dark or white chocolate, as well as Filipinos Bigsticks. I found it equally amusing that Filipinos are sold alongside popular cookie brands such as Oreo and ChipsAhoy! But it was not amusing that a former administration made a big fuss out of it by filing a diplomatic protest saying that the use of "Filipinos" for a commercial brand was insulting. The Foreign Affairs secretary reluctantly filed the protest saying that he saw nothing wrong with the use of "Filipinos" as a brand name and pointed out that Austrians don't complain that small sausages are referred to as Vienna sausages! I'm actually happy they chose the name Filipinos since the biscuits are really good! What do you think?
