See you at WordCamp Davao!

WordCamp Philippines 2008We’ve now decided on the venue for WordCamp Davao on 4 September 2008. For those of you who have registered for the event (and complied with the requirements), see you at Bryan’s Grill & Café in Palm Village. For those who aren’t familiar with the place, click through to the locator map.

Bryan’s Grill is a cozy al fresco restaurant where we can sit back and relax while listening to the WordCamp speakers: Councilor Pete Laviña, Red Rola, yours truly, and of course, Mr. WordPress himself, Matt Mullenweg. And it helps that the food at Bryan’s is simply spectacular.

It’s going to be an informal event — come as you are! There’s a swimming pool there, and if you’re up to it, you’re welcome to take an evening dip (so don’t forget to bring proper swim gear). And don’t be late! We start promptly at 6:00 PM for dinner.

This mini-WordCamp in Davao is part of WordCamp Philippines 2008, the main event of which will be held at the College of St. Benilde, Taft Ave., Manila on 6 September 2008. The first WordCamp in Southeast Asia is made possible by the following sponsors:

Happy Birthday! Oh and some Mindanao Music Awards update

Yep, if you’ve been around this block long enough you know that Southisms.com was born on a July.

And so was I.

You can’t blame me for loving the month of July. This month has been packed with so many things I hardly have time to go online and type one of ‘em posts for the birthday of this brainchild.  Anyway, brief history:  Southisms used to be and was supposed to be (exclusively) a music blog.  The rise of the niche blogging hype had called this space for that purpose initially.  However, the writer has transformed over time from the booze-guzzling musicionado to the tube-whirring, film-powered “student” of life, the universe and everything.  So now this must be a blog about the universe and everything, as far as my media brain cell is concerned.  But can’t help drifting back to music-related events since it’s still pretty much part of my nature.

muzikaSay for instance, I’ve been hearing a lot of buzz about the upcoming Muzika del Sur Music Awards 2008 for August.  Unfortunately I had an ear infection so I wasn’t able to cover their preliminary events.

I’ve heard the nominations have closed and that’s where the fun usually starts.

In my experience working for the Research Team before, the awards features a range of categories namely: Best Music Video, Rock, Ragga, Metal, Pop, Hip-Hop, and The Mindanawon Award.  Each band in the final roster goes through a nomination process and goes through an extensive review by a panel of jurors.  Last year, we incorporated an SMS system which allowed fans to vote for their favorite artists to be awarded the People’s Choice.  Unfortunately, the process was inevitably problematic and faced a slight amount of controversy when misinformation about the texting information was proliferated.  Thankfully, the bands were such sports about it.

This year’s music awards event had also its own set of problems this year such as the controversy surrounding an Idol Grill (Davao) gig.  My friend Shieka, who was part of the production of the said event had this to rant on the Friendster bulletins:

IMAGINE IF THIS WILL HAPPEN TO YOU:

** YOU HAVE THIS EVENT THAT YOU PREPARED FOR ALMOST A MONTH PROMOTING AND DOING ALL THE STUFF JUST TO MAKE IT HAPPEN.
YOU INVITED LOCAL ARTISTS FROM CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY ( GASULINA) AND TAGUM CITY(KEYK) TO PERFORM JUST TO PRESENT UNITY AMONG MINDANAO ARTISTS, NOT TO MENTION SOME LOCAL DAVAO BANDS WHO ALSO EAGERLY PARTICIPATED JUST TO SHOW SUPPORT ON THE VISION OF MUZIKA DEL SUR.
** MOST OF THE LOCAL ARTIST ORGANIZATONS FLOCKED DURING THE EVENT JUST TO SHOW SUPPORT ON THE DRIVE OF PROMOTING THE MUSIC SCENE OF MINDANAO.
**FRIENDS,FAMILIES,TRI-MEDIA WENT TO WITNESS THE FIRST PRE-EVENT ACTIVITY OF THE UPCOMING MUSIC AWARDS 2008. THEN HERE COMES OUR HERO!
IN THE MIDDLE OF THE PROGRAM OUR IDOL COMMAND AND HIS JUSTICE LEAGUE DECIDED TO PULL OUT OUR EVENT BACK DROP STREAMER BECAUSE HIS IDOL LOGO WILL NOT BE SEEN (A. BY THE CAMERA, B. BY THE PEOPLE, C. BY HIS EMPLOYEES, D. BY HIS DRINKING BUDDIES, OR E. ALL OF THE ABOVE). AND WHEN WE ASKED HIS HIGHNESS TO JUST RECONSIDER OUR EVENT BECAUSE SOMEHOW WE PAID HIM TO HAVE OUR EVENT IN HIS KINGDOM… WHOOOOSHHHHHH!!!! OUR IDOL WITH ALL HIS MIGHT POINTED HIS MAGIC WAND TO HIS “CLOWNS” AND ORDERED ONCE AGAIN LADIES AND GENTLEMEN …ONCE AGAIN WITH(DRUM ROLL PLEASE..) ” I COMMAND YOU TO STOP YOUR EVENT! BY THE POWER OF MY MAGIC WAND MAGSITIGIL KAYOO MGA MAHADERA!! KEVERRR KUNG SINO PA YANG MGA MEDIA AT SPONSORS AT BISITA AT BANDANG NANDIYAN, WIZH KO EL! MAGDUSA KAYO MGA BRUHA! ” SO WITH ALL THE SHAME AND DEGRADATION WE PACK OUR THINGS,OUR PRIDE,OURSELVES, AND OUR HATRED HOME.
WE SOUGHT OUR REFUGE AT THE DURIAN BAR (THANKS PAOLO).

Being a musician and part of the media myself, that is NOT an ethical way to treat people from the media and music industry.  The fact that the event organizers have already paid for the place secures their discretion to manage the setting and materials to be used for the event.  Moreover, once the place is paid for, the event organizer and the outlet comes into an agreement that cannot be revoked under any circumstance.  The adage the show must go on is a practical truth because it’s too expensive to flush out the production when it is happening and it insults the professional integrity of all people involved in the production just because one person had a little problem.

Moreover Idol Grill never apologized to the production team and the bands for this horrible treatment.  Publicly or otherwise.

Anyways, I hate how there should always be politics in these events. Why can’t people be fun-loving and just listen to some friggin music?

Hello, buy me a beer and earn a friend!

Concerto — an indie film

Published by Blogie under , Davao, Society, Special Events, movies, trailers

Concerto From my family mailing list, I got a heads-up about an independent film by Director Paul Alexander Morales, Concerto. According to the trailer and blog, the film is about a family in Davao and their ordeal during the last part of World War II.

To the right is the movie poster, which I got from the movie’s blog [http://concertothefilm.blogspot.com].

Watching the trailer, I was really intrigued by the theme, the apparent story of the movie. It says in the blog that it’s about a “piano concert” that the family held in the forests of Davao City amidst the war. Presumably, this is the time of the Japanese Occupation of the Philippines.

This film, which is a historical account by the way, is doubly interesting for me. Since it is about Davao somehow, and because it is placed in a historical setting with Japanese personages, I really hope I’ll be able to see it.

There have been screenings in Manila since 12 July 2008, and one more scheduled on the 19th — tomorrow! — at the CCP’s Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo. I wish we’d get a chance to see Concerto here in Davao as well.

The film is part of the CINEMALAYA 2008 competition, among 19 other entries.

Intelligent software by Lane Systems

As this kind of technology is not yet pervasive in Davao City, not many locals are aware of the advanced developments being accomplished by a certain Davao-based software house. Cutting-edge technologies in industry-strength inventory systems, telephony services — these software applications are being designed and developed right here.

Lane Systems Lane Systems Inc. is a 12-year old company that has been involved in foreign projects, long before outsourcing and offshoring became buzzwords in the Philippines. Lane Systems (LSI), spearheaded by CEO Rodney Jao, is Davao’s showcase of success in the field of software development, and they are showing no signs of slowing down.

They call their best offerings “mobility solutions”. Centered mostly on inventory and related applications, LSI has developed and deployed programs for barcode- and RFID-based business requirements. For example, currently, they are building an application that will run on a handheld rugged computer. Their application will make it possible to gather data contained in two-dimensional barcodes, as well as process such data for use as decision-making business information.

Blogie with the Intermec CN3 This gadget LSI is working on, an Intermec CN3 Mobile Computer (shown in photo), is capable of electronic data collection and processing for entire warehouses. It’s a remarkable piece of equipment: a very durable handheld computer with Bluetooth and barcode scanner (one- and two-dimensional), WiFi-enabled, plus it has a slot for a SIM card. It runs on Windows Mobile, and LSI is currently developing an application that will run on it and take advantage of the hardware’s functionalities. The project is for a client in the United States.

In the field of telephony, LSI counts a number of call centers in Metro Manila and Cebu as clients. BPO companies, especially call centers, have very demanding requirements for contact management, and the people at Lane Systems have delivered to their customers’ satisfaction.

Lane Systems’ motto speaks of their business culture: Process Improvement Through Technology. Here’s a quotable quote from their website: “Lane Systems is unique in several aspects; among them is the unparalleled ability to examine a business challenge, apply appropriate technology solutions, and effectively articulate the solution to our own teams and the customer from start to finish. We guarantee customer satisfaction as we go the ‘extra mile’ to see that our customers know we mean business when we say we are committed to them.”

More than just their clients, LSI also takes care of their employees. Operating much like their Silicon Valley counterparts, LSI believes that the talent pool that they have is as much capital as money in the bank. That’s why their people are some of the better paid technology workers in Davao, as well as the more fulfilled in their careers.

Lane Systems is hiring! For more information, please visit their Web site, or call 221-3344. You may also submit your résumé to Davao Tech Jobs.

An Urban Challenge

The other day, my friend Kiko asked me “Coi, naa ka diri ugma”? (Coi, are you going to be here tomorrow?). “Uhuh, ngano?” (Yes. Why?) I replied. “Naa man gu’y urban challenge ugma. Basi gusto ka mag picture. Diri man gud ang isa ka challenge sa race.” (There will be an urban challenge tomorrow. I was thinking, maybe you want to take pictures. One of the challenges in the race will be held here. ). “Ah, ok. Sige lang, basi madala nako akong cam ugma”. (Oh yes, maybe I can bring my cam tomorrow).

The next morning, I was able to bring my camera after getting it from my bro’s office. It was 2:30 p.m. already when I was on the way to Kiko’s house. I was riding a jeepney. As we passed by Bankerohan Bridge, I saw a girl jogging as if she was going after something or someone. Suddenly, a sweaty man leaped from the side of the jeepney and I realized he’s a teammate of that girl. They’re the participants of the urban race.

As I enter the compound where Kiko’s place is located, I saw 3 flags formed in a straight line. I also saw Kiko, his wife’s son, Bams, and a couple of kids waiting for the participants to arrive. I also saw Smooch wearing a T-shirt of the said event. I wonder what her participation in the event.. hmm.. By the way guys, I want you to meet Smooch…

… a 2 year old Great Dane. Here she is with Strawberry.

The task is that you will Walk with Smooch in a zigzag form passing through those flags. Easy isn’t? You bet!

Now here are the participants doing the task..

I don't know what the guys are thinking here.. hehe.
Here's Puff (Left) and Sniff (Right). I think they're figuring out how can they get this cookie.

Condemned

I've read a message posted by my friend Sheika on my friendster bulletin. Sometimes I get to join the production team of the show as a camera person. It's Muzika del Sur, a local TV show that promotes unity among Mindanao artists. I realized that if this was my experience.. I did the same thing.. Condemn Idol Grill!

Places to visit in Davao: Pearl Farm

Published by nitrosaint under , Davao, davao resorts, pearl farm

Summer in Davao

Ow. I just figured out, I only have two weeks left before the classes end. So basically, my summer starts two weeks from now. We’re still trying to figure out where to go this year. We’ve been to Camiguin last year. The initial plan is to go to Bohol but our budget won’t allow us.

Instead of looking for other places to visit this summer, I decided to promote my own Davao City. This is going to be a series of posts featuring the best resorts and tourist destinations here in Davao.

For today’s post, it’s gonna be about Pearl Farm Beach Resort.

Pearl Farm Beach Resort is located at Samal, an island off the coast of Davao City. Pearl Farm is a 45-minute boat ride from Davao City Wharf. The resort was once a pearl farm where thousands of white-lipped oysters were imported from Sulu and were cultivated for white, pink and gold pearls.

Pear Farm’s unique cottages were patterned from the traditional houses of the Samal Tribe in Sulu. The resort offers five different choices of cottages/villas; Balay House ($115), Samal House ($210), Mandaya House ($240), Samal Suite ($350) and Sunset Suite ($350).

Boats going to Pearl Farm Beach Resort are available at these hours:

From Davao Marina Wharf to Resort (ETD 0800/1330/1600/1800H)
From Resort to Davao Marina Wharf (ETD 0645/1000/1300/1600H)

Reservations may be done online through their website (http://www.pearlfarmresort.com/) or you may also contact them through their Manila Office at:

15th Floor, 139 Corporate Center
Valero St., Salcedo Village, Makati City

TEL: (632) 750-1896 / 750-1898 / 893-2093
FAX: (632) 750-1894
For those who are planning to visit the resort, you may also check some Value Hotels in the Philippines while you are in Manila.

Itong tag na to ay nagmula sa isang babaeng nakatira sa Munich. I am supposed to write this in english, but what the heck. I don’t think this language would suit to my image. Ehmmm mein english ist leider sehr beschiessen, also ich lass es lieber.

According to Cheh:
The very purpose of this assignment is to find out what a person looks like and gives you (readers) a better insight & gives you chance to actually see who’s writing to you.

David Airey says:
Putting a face to the name of someone you haven’t met helps recognition and adds a more personal feel to your conversations. What photograph shows you in a light we don’t often see through your blog?

NOW IT’S MY TURN

It’s my turn to see what I can see, I hope you’ll understand this time’s just for me because it’s my turn…la la la lala…

Gusto ko nalang sanang kumanta dahil para sa akin, there is no need to describe myself since you all know me already, diba?

Name the park contest

The old PTA Park, as everyone in Davao should’ve noticed by now, has undergone a major renovation, and is due to be completed in December this year. It’s so named because of its having been the grounds used by the Parents and Teachers Association of Kapitan Tomas Monteverde High School way back when. If I’m not mistaken, the Association office had such a huge “PTA” sign, and so people started calling the place that way.

Right smack in the heart of downtown Davao, the new park, as before, will offer residents and visitors a place to unwind, relax and take in the city’s sights and sounds. The nearly 4-hectare park is nestled in the center of 3 hotels (The Apo View, Casa Leticia and Royal Mandaya Hotel) and numerous restaurants. Once finished, I imagine it’s going to be the perfect place for a quick break during weekdays, and for longer, leisurely strolls during weekends. (more…)

Going back to Rock music

I’m currently under Rock Rehab - kind of my made up term for this period of time I’ve decided to lock myself away from all other types of music except of course, Rock. This involves hours worth of listening to Rock-only playlists with artists like Radiohead, The New Pornographers, The Decemberists, Wolfmother, Deftones, The Metric, Frank Zappa and the inescapable 70’s jangle rock of Steely Dan (mind you, this is just to name a few). I’ve come up with a pretty eclectic array of artist to be listened to probably up until the end of this month.

I guess at this point, you might be asking why?

Call me weird but I have a strange philosophy about music which suggests that the music you listen to is directly proportional to your temperament. Of course, this formula suggests that altering your choice of music can likewise alter your mood. See, before I’ve decided to admit myself to Rock Rehab, I have been listening to immensely poppy tunes and loads of sleepy songs. It’s time for me to get off my ass and kick out procrastination because I’ve got tons of work to do! (Which reminds me, the company I work for AVL Film and TV Productions, is planning to launch a Mindanao-based Music awards - more details later.) Anyway, more to the point that rock is exactly the kind of music I need right now, especially, happy-sounding-rock, I’ve noticed I’ve turned soft lately and I blame it all on the music I’ve been feeding myself for the past few months. It’s time to bring back some of my sarcasm and regain my steel guts. Because yeah, some people can be tough even if they listen to softer tunes, but nothing gears up your mood that way better than some orgasmic Hendrix solo. And yes, rock is orgasmic. Nothing gets me at a better mood than music that’s as good as sex; topped only by sex itself.

So I’m going to snub artists like Feist, Explosions in the sky, Jose Gonzales, Emily Haines and Deerhunter for the meantime. I absolutely love shoegazer like music but I’m not really in the mood for that. So if you are, you might as well check out those artists and let’s be each other’s contrast and tell me about it!

Rock rehab begins. Woo!

We’ve already reserved the website for our upcoming Music Awards, hopefully I can plug it on this site as soon as the launching is in order. Meanwhile, watch out for it some time in the middle of August. Nominations will begin by next week. Support your favorite Mindanao-based band! Be part of Muzika del Sur Music Awards 2007. More details later on this week. Adios!

My Davao cuisine photo contest entry no. 1

Published by Lori under Contest, Davao, Food, Places, Uncategorized, events, photos

This is my 1st entry for the Davao cuisine photo contest.

Davao Cuisine is an ambiguous idea. But when I began to listen to myself (and my gut), the first place I could think of was the eatery nearest to the hearts of a Davaoenyo’s POCKET. There’s a quaint little eatery somewhere between corner Anda (Now, F. Inigo) and Bonifacio Street, where I have my “starving artist” lunch times. Starving artists have starving pockets too! And there’s no place like “Faye’s eatery” to turn my world around to the happier side. Here’s my friend Chico who understands as well as I do what the feeling is like.

Here are my other entries for the Davao Cuisine photo contest:
