A message to the Queen

Published by winston under , Blog, Cebu City, first week in cebu

I got alarmed by the sudden turn out of things. It was two months ago when I got here in Cebu. Like any blogger who runs a personal blog, all I want is to write about my personal experiences. Thus, I published my first week in Cebu experience. Going back two days ago, I didn’t realize that a lot of people got alarmed with what I wrote. Somebody must have dug my archives and found that post. It was then also that I realized that a lot of people are unhappy with what I wrote.

I’ve been to a lot of places before but this is my first to be away from home for more than two months. My initial reaction is to be shocked by the sudden change in environment and culture. There’s that thing we call “first impression“. It so happened that during my first week in Cebu, what I saw was the “infamous” side of the city and my impression about Cebu was tarnished with that image.

It was not my intention to spread a bad word about the city. Most of my time is spent with Cebuanos. I have no plans of getting my butt kicked while I’m with them. I also have lots of Cebuano friends and I have no intention of hurting their feelings.

Thus, I apologize to those who got offended by my writing. It is not my intention to offend you. I also apologize if my commentators and readers have offended you in their remarks.

I would also like to thank those people who gave their advise and tips about Cebu. I will apply those for the rest of my stay in this City.

Each of our beloved cities have their own beauty. The best way to share these is through experience. I’m more than happy to experience the beautiful things Cebu can offer.

I missed blogging

I’ve been away from my blog for a long time.  Since I moved here in Cebu, I rarely find time for blogging.  It’s difficult for me to balance work, studies and blogging. I was able to maintain my online presence though through plurk, twitter and my aggregate microblog

For these past few weeks, I kept myself busy with work and studies.  I am being pressured from work and studies.  I had to stay in the coffee shop the whole afternoon to work on a client’s project which we started while I was still in Davao.  It has been a very difficult time for me.  I had difficulties in balancing my review and my work.  I used a big portion of my study time for work.  My review was compromised.

Despite this, I’m still glad I was able to finish the first phase of that project.  My colleague also promised that he’ll give me a break from the project so I can concentrate on my review. In fact, the result of the last exam was not bad at all.  I was able to get a high score in Communications (…I failed in Math), a lot better than what I expected. I realized I need to exert a lot of effort to catch up.

Aside from work and review, another thing which made me busy was Visayas Bloggers.  A couple of weeks ago, we (Kuya Blogie and I) invited all the bloggers in Cebu City for an informal meeting. I can say that the meeting was a successful one.  It was the first bloggers meeting conducted to organize the bloggers here in Cebu City. A lot of plans have been set for the blogging community here in Cebu City, one of which is the organization of the Visayas Bloggers Community, a counterpart of the successful Mindanao Bloggers, Inc.. So if you are a blogger from the Visayas Region, please join us in our mailing list.

In an hour, I will be attending the Governor’s press conference.  Mr. Wilson Ng invited us to attend the press conference.  According to Rio, the governor wants us bloggers to take part in the promotion of Cebu City’s tourism industry.  Also, the Mandaue Chamber of Commerce is organizing a blogging contest which is in line with a business event next month.  I will be posting the details of this contest later. )

NoFollow, DoFollow, MarshMallow

NoFollow, DoFollow, MarshMallow

Here’s me trying my hand at explaining the ramifications of these terms. First two words have something to do with comment links (you can argue that these two words may pertain to any link and you will be right, but in this case I am limiting my explanation to the links found in the comments area) while the last one goes well with hotdogs and bonfires and is generally considered delicious.

Ok, here we go.

Most blogging platforms are inherently NoFollow, which means that any link (usually author’s URL) included in a comment will not pass PageRank. I say most because I haven’t tried out all the blogging platforms out there. And even if I say “All” I could still be wrong. Either way I’m screwed. The relevance of not passing PageRank is that the link that you included in a comment that you made will not have any value as far as your PageRank is concerned.

We all know that backlinks are supposed to count as a vote of approval for your blog, however if that backlink is NoFollow, it’s like shooting blanks. Alright control your overactive imagination. Now what it doesn’t mean however is that search engines will not crawl these nofollow links, they will, and they’ll come a-knockin’ on your door, but that’s just it. Although these links are still counted as one of your backlinks, they’re just not that valuable.

DoFollow links on the other hand are the kind of links you want. Spiders crawl them and they’re considered an affirmative vote in your favor. So if you’re on a link building mission with the intent of skyrocketing your PageRank via a commenting strategy, you would be much better off seeking out those DoFollow blogs. Here’s a DoFollow community that you could join to get you started.

So You Want Your Blog To Be DoFollow Eh?

A bit of caution on this one. DoFollow blogs are easy target for spammers so I recommend that you enable comment moderation for you to sort out which ones to grant your precious Dofollow link. If you don’t have the stomach for this, better stick to nofollow. Still there’s a valid argument to be made for making your blog DoFollow. For one, it motivates your regular readers to comment which could result to a lovely discussion on your posts. Fair enough?

Now, if you use WordPress, you’re in luck. There are a lot of DoFollow plugins out there starting with this one.  Or if you want to make things a bit more manageable(remember my note on spamming? this is a good tool to mitigate that), you can use this one– this is an interesting plugin that only activates DoFollow for commenters after they’ve posted a number of comments. Very nice huh?

Now if you’re on blogspot, go switch to Wordpress!

Kidding. Actually here’s this tutorial for blogger’s beta template that you can use. It’s actually very easy to follow. Again, better turn on that comment moderation thing before you do this.

But What About CommentLuv?

What about it? It parses the visitors last blog post and that’s it. Unless the DoFollow plugin is installed(for Wordpress) or the nofollow tag is deleted(for Blogger), it’s still NoFollow.

Free Beautiful Wordpress Templates

I wasn’t able to update this blog as much as I wanted to because of some whatever reason. But now that I’ve finally gotten around to doing what’s supposed to be done, I came face to face with a rather daunting task for a wordpress newbie– modifying my free wordpress template so it won’t look like one of those cookie-cutter themes.

Because I used to be a Blogger fan boy (I think I still am except that I’ve migrated my blogs to wordpress), I am somewhat perplexed as to what to do first. Since I have a self-hosted wordpress installation, I had to deal with changing permissions and making sense out of all the wordpress .php files. I guess all that practice in modifying blogger templates did pay-off. Still I managed to make a decent (still not perfect) job I guess. Although, man, Internet Explorer likes to make a mess of things.

How I Came Up With My Gorgeous Wordpress Template

Let’s see, I started with a whole lot of searching in the internet for the template that would suit my needs perfectly. I wasn’t really sure what I want exactly but I know I want a widget-ready wordpress template, and it has to have 3 columns. I also wanted a template that would allow me to display ads in the sidebar, and something that’s adsense ready as well.

The good thing and the bad thing about Wordpress is that it has a lot of beautiful templates that are offered absolutely for free. It’s a good thing because you have a lot of choices but at the same time it’s a bad thing as well because without a clear template in mind, you could be overwhelmed by the choices in display.

After several days of searching for the perfect wordpress template, I finally stumbled on Dezzain Studio where I got to see the Timeline Theme for the first time. I was instantly drawn to the color combination and the features embedded in the theme. So I worked on putting all the necessary wordpress plugins and widgets and did a little template tweaking until I was satisfied. Now it still retains its proud form but somehow I’ve managed to insert a little of me here and there.

And then I came across this wordpress template collection at WPZoom. Holy guacamole, I may have to change my template again. Gah.

Next up, I’ll be compiling my ten best free wordpress templates.

Free Wordpress SEO eBook

This free SEO eBook could not have come at a better time. I have recently migrated my free Blogger blog to Wordpress and I was anxious to do everything right the first time. Luckily I found a good Wordpress resource from the Search Engine Journal site. This resource is a FREE WORDPRESS SEO eBOOK authored by Mihaela Lica of http://ewriting.pamil-visions.com. I have been an avid subscriber of Search Engine Journal and have religiously read their articles everyday. I find most of their posts to be very helpful for bloggers.

The FREE SEO eBOOK is especially written for Wordpress although it can be adapted to apply to other blogging platforms as well. Although the SEO techniques described therein is very basic from the point of view of an SEO expert, to a newbie blogger like me, the techniques were very helpful. The FREE SEO eBOOK covers general topics from installing Wordpress to link building tips.

I especially liked the part where that very helpful Wordpress plugin, All-in-one SEO Pack was discussed. It’s very enlightening and made me realize the mistakes I’ve been doing all along.

I strongly suggest and recommend that you download and read the FREE WORDPRESS SEO EBOOK.

Migration From Beta Blogger To Wordpress

Man this is some work. I have read almost all the how to’s on painless beta blogger migrations to wordpress and I have to say this is excruciating work! Still after having finally done it, everything seems worth the hours spent in front of my computer. A lot of the experts agree on two things to do the migration but with usually the same goal/s in mind– ensuring that the previous links don’t get broken and all that google juice and pagerank will not go to waste.

In my previous free blog I have already cranked up the PR meter to PR4 and have managed to land in the first page of some very competitive keywords. The problem was I was using a free account. I really should have started with a dotcom from the very start. Had I done that, I wouldn’t have to go through all the research I did in order to migrate successfully.

But still, there is a silver lining in all of these. Had I started with a dotcom from the get go, I wouldn’t have learned about 301/302 redirects, .htaccess, and all those meta tags redirect methods that a lot of experts were betting their nuts on as surefire remedies to the pain of migration.

The first instructions I did consider was Techcounter’s instructions, but the loooongg queu of questions scared the heck out of me. Then there were a lot of others in between before I arrived at bloggerbloke’s site. At first I had it made with his very nifty .htaccess system. It really worked for him and I think for others too. Even I was convinced I had it down pat. I typed my redirected blog address and voila, I was taken to blogger’s redirect page and then eventually to this site. It’s all good, except that in bloggerbloke’s case, there’s none of that temporary blogger stop.

I was prepared to live with it until I clicked on some of the permalinks pointing to my own blog. It did the usual redirect and ended up with a 404 error. I kinda slipped back down to earth after that. I had to play my final ace. I tapped on the great Wordpress reserve for help. And there it was, the plug-in created by Sam Wong — the Blogger Redirector. I installed the template and removed the .htaccess code I pasted earlier. Everything worked real well after that. Including the permalinks.

I have already placed the noindex, nofollow meta in my old blog hoping that I won’t be penalized for duplicate content. I’ll also try to do a little 302 redirect so the search engines would know that I have moved to a new location and then later on will do the permanent 301 redirect.

Right now, my concern is how to get out of that blogger temporary stop when any of my link or my url is typed. I also have to work a little bit harder promoting this site. Also some of my internal links (of course they came with the migration) are still pointing to the old blog! I still have to see if there’s a quicker way of changing these internal links behaviour so they will recognize their new location. However I only have very few internal links to modify in case I decide to do everything manually.

It may take me a couple of weeks more to finally say that I have moved successfully and comfortably here in my self-hosted Wordpress. But I’m not really that worried. After all, Rome wasn’t built in a day.

If you happen to be here and you have some questions about migration, shoot me a note, I may not be an expert yet but with all the internet literature I’ve read and the kinks I’ve encountered, I may just be able to offer a few insights.

Cheers!

5-Minute Ceiling Patrol

This post is my entry to a blog competition over at FuelMyBlog sponsored by Tsheets.com.

Given my predisposition to blog at all times of the day, one would think that the first 5 minutes of my working time would be spent hunched in front of the computer, checking the previous night’s blog stats. While this may be a likely scenario (after all, my computer is just beside my bed and is running almost 24/7), this is actually not the case 99.99% of the time.

My working day’s first 5 minutes is usually spent doing ceiling patrol. I scan my bedroom ceiling with my eyes, taking note of every crook and crevice while reviewing the previous day’s happenings and planning the things that I want to accomplish for the day. Of course at the back of my mind, I’m already itching to see if somebody has left a comment on my latest blog post, but I try to keep that urge under control.

Sometimes during these 5-minute reveries, I wonder if I’m not missing out on life with the kind of lifestyle that I lead. For most folks, a life lived 90% of the time in front of the computer is a terrible waste. But as we say in blogging, we have to find our niche, and this – blogging, being in front of the computer almost all the time – this is my niche. It may not mean much to some but this is where I believe I am happiest.

My daily 5-minute contemplation only serves to confirm that belief.

Tuesday: Cleaning my locker

Published by winston under , Blog, Kalasag, last five days in davao

There’s nothing remarkable that happened to me last Tuesday except that I started packing up my office stuff.

I went to school in the afternoon to get started on cleaning my office locker which had been mine for three years. I thought packing-up is going to be an emo activity but it was not. Maybe it was brought upon by the not-so-nice experience I had with them these past few weeks.

I left my box in the office and decided to bring it home the following day.  I also went back to Boyd’s to get something to eat before going home.

To .Com Or Not To .Com - Blogging For Beginners Series #1

Blogging For BeginnersBefore reading further, I suggest you read this article first — Why Do You Want To Blog — this is my way of ensuring that you get your head straight. Blogging may be easy and fun but it burns a lot of time. Make sure that you don’t waste yours by thinking about the questions posed in this article.

Ok, assuming that you already have all your ducks in a row, the first and very important thing that you need to tackle is this.

Should you get a .Com or not?

There are many arguments surrounding this question. But most of the time the counter-argument is always THE COST. Why would I shell out money for something that I will be doing for fun and only in my free time? Why indeed?

I believe a little background is in order.

There are two very powerful blogging platforms in the internet today– Blogger, and Wordpress. Sure there are others like Xanga and Typepad and if you’re Pinoy, there’s I.ph. And all of these blogging platforms are free. Before I get ahead of myself, blogging platforms are the sites/technology that allow you to do your blogging. So if these are free, then why the need to go the .Com way?

For one, it’s for aesthetic purposes. These platforms will allow you to use their services for free and will assign a sub-domain for you. Example; if you use blogger, your blog site’s name will be http://your-blog.blogspot.com; for wordpress it will be http://your-blog.wordpress.com and so with other blogging platforms. You see how many characters you need to put in the browser window to get to your site? Whereas if you get your own .com or your own domain, your blog will be http://your-blog.com. It’s like getting a free rent (using free blogging platforms) and owning your own real estate (with your own .Com). See the difference?

Another counter-argument for having your own .Com is that you need to host it. By hosting it means that you need to have some place or a ‘host’ that will allow you to store your articles, pictures, videos. And yes, you have to pay for that too. An exception to this is Blogger. Blogger allows you to host your articles, pictures, videos in their servers even if you want to have your own domain name or .Com.

Cost Considerations

Oh yeah, costs money versus free. Actually a no-brainer right? But let’s have a clear mind about this and examine how much all this will cost you, assuming that you are curious about having your own internet real estate.

First is the domain name. The running rate now is around $6 - $10 USD/year. If you take advantage of Yahoo!’s offer, you can get a domain name for $1.99 for the first year and then regular pricing for the second year.

Next is the hosting company. You can get a hosting plan for as low as $14 a year. I even got a hosting plan a couple of months ago for only $7/year.

So in terms of economic comparison, there’s the free ==>$0 versus your own home for around $25/year. How does this feel for you now?

Now What?

My suggestion is you keep a cool head about this one. Nobody is rushing you. You have all the time in the world to make this decision later (but not so later). I say, get your hands dirty first with blogging. Sign up for one of those free blogging platforms first and then see if you can hack it for a period of time writing stuff that interests you. I’m saying this because with blogging it’s easy enough to get hooked. Once you get to interact with other bloggers, see people visiting your site, there’s a surreal thrill that comes along with this very popular media.

[Here's a little article I made comparing the merits of Blogger and Wordpress which I hope will guide you when you choose your blogging platform. You don't want to be thinking about other platforms at this point.]

But, as I said, you need to go back to thinking about getting your .Com after a few weeks or a couple of months(not more than 2 please). The reason for this is because, after your free blog is in existence for some time and you have felt the rush in doing this thing, the powers that be, in this case Google and Technorati and Alexa, will start rating your site. Trust me, when that time comes when you’re getting serious and you have all these nice looking Ranks and Authorities, you’d wish you got your .Com from the very start because when you allow a lot of time to elapse before getting your own domain, you will have to let go of all these beautiful Ranks and Authorities and start from scratch.

Don’t let these things bother you at this time though, I will be talking more about this one as we go along this series. The important thing right now is immersing yourself in this blogging experience. Go out there and write your fingers off. Have fun.

Monday: Transport Strike, Work and Food

I decided I’d do a five-post series about my last five days in Davao. I’ll be leaving for Cebu this Saturday and I want to keep track on how I will spend my five remaining days.

It’s Monday. There is a nation-wide transport strike going on. I can somehow see its effect. The city government deployed buses to replace the public transport. But I’m glad there are taxis around.

I spent the afternoon with Kuya Andrew and Ate Ria. We went to Fagioli to grab some coffee and abuse the free WiFi they offer. Kuya and I had to finish some work, or rather get some work started (again). Ate Ria left earlier because she had to get something from the mall. We stayed at the coffee shop until seven in the evening and head back down town to pick Ate Ria.

We decided to have dinner at Dulce Manos. The three of us ordered their famous Shrimp with Alavar Sauce (P85) while Kuya Blogie, who followed, had his serving of Lechon Kawali (P105). The meal was “underwhelming”, or we were not “whelmed” at all for that matter.

We again decided to leave the place and look for a new restaurant to eat. The group decided to try Cafe Vivere in Mt. Apo Street. We ordered their pork steak while Kuya Blogie ordered Hungarian Sausage. The meal satisfied our hungry tummies. ) Thanks to the owner of Cafe Vivere, who let us in even if they were about to close, when we arrived.

That did not end our food adventure that night. We went to Basti’s Brew to finish the work we left. I tried their Cinnamon Roll topped with cream cheese (P60) at it was great. ) Kuya Drew was so happy that night because he was able to finish the task I gave him. Tsk tsk tsk. While I, on the other hand, was left clueless on how to work on my Joomla Component problem.

It was a brain draining day because of work, but nonetheless, it was also “food-filling”. )
This series is tagged with “last five days in Davao“.

Introduction: Blogging For Beginners

Looking at the things I’ve posted so far, I’ve come to notice how random my entries have become. Most of the time I’ve talked about things that interest me, and those that I’ve learned as I journey everyday towards the twilight of blog understanding. I’ve never really focused on one central idea so to speak. Which is just fine considering that blogging is supposed to be free and the blogger has all the rights in the world to talk about what he fancies as long as the things being talked about are within legal bounds. I surely don’t want to post something that would get me into trouble.

Recently, blogging has become really, really interesting for me. It has been interesting from the start, but now as I gained a lot of insights towards this popular media, I felt the need to share something to those who are starting out. There may be a couple of things here that might be of interest to newbie bloggers but there seems to be no continuity in which those new to blogging can really follow to make their journey as meaningful as they’d like it to be.

As such, in my next posts, I’ll be focusing on the basics so that those who are taking baby steps towards blogging can learn directly from what I have learned so far and not go groping in the dark as I once did. I will still be interspersing my posts with those things that interest me, but for the most part, I’ll be cataloguing some of those I’ve come across as I grew in experience as a blogger.

Watch this site, there may be something for you here in the following days.

SocialSpark Is Here Now

Published by ZAM under , Blog, online world

Just last month, I was invited to try out the beta version of Social Spark. For some reasons, this invitation had slipped out of my mind and so I didn’t respond to it. After awhile I got the same invitation again, only that this time, the offer is already open for everyone.

So far, I have liked it there. I’m still learning the system since I’m still new but I am having fun. I have made some friends there. Unlike other social communities, SocialSpark gives you an opportunity to take on paid posts. Not only that, you could even get connected with the advertisers themselves. It’s really a promising venue for everyone, bloggers and advertisers alike.

The feedback system is just good, too. If you are not sure whether to take up an opportunity, you may read the comment section and find out what other bloggers think about the opps. And you can give a prop or a thumbs up to blogs or bloggers or users, if you like them; a drop or thumbs down, if you don’t. Every profile has a message board, too and your friends –or anyone can easily post their comments for you.

To see what it a SocialSpark profile is like, check my profile with them. You can see some of my friends here, who has recently viewed me and the recent opps I have taken , among other details provided.

Commented On

Commented On is a new application that you folks may be interested in. This is a bookmarking application that keeps track of all the sites where you have placed a comment. Oftentimes we just place a comment on a blog we may have just stumbled on and then forget all about that comment.

This has been a nagging problem with me before, especially during my rampant bloghopping days. I’d just comment away and forget all about it as I move to another blog. Sometimes I feel really frustrated because some of those blogs that I’ve visited are really good and I would have really wanted to visit them again. So much so that I was contemplating of creating some sort of a mash-up that would allow me to store all my comments and the related sites where those comments were submitted. Thankfully, with Comment On, I didn’t have to create one. Not that I would be able to create one anyway.

I think the only thing here is if you have a lot of blogs and you use a lot of pen names or aliases. I haven’t really tried creating multiple accounts but I believe it should be possible.

Check this one out, it would surely be worth your while.

I Got It, They Have It

I already received my gift pack from Campbell's the other night. And can I just say I was so delighted -and excited-when the guard handed the package to me that it seemed my hands were shaking. No, that's not an exaggeration.

campbell

I just love the shirt - because it's so soft. The sad thing is, it is not my size. So I gave it to my mother.

And then, the tote bag - how I adore it. I was already making plans as to what clothes fit best to go with it. But I might just forget about that because there's another soul who thinks it's lovely -my sister. And she practically begged me for it. So how can I refuse and not give it to her?

Thanks Campbell -and thanks Elina.

Miscellaneous thoughts

Published by jac velasco under , Blog, journal, me, schooling, work

MY BLOG LOVE STORY: This is my 304th post. The first post for April. I am now on my third year as a resident of blogspot. I admit, there were times that i tried closing this page but after some time, I always go back and tempted to update it again. I had a very romantic relationship with this account. Cool off. LQs. Memorable events. i made several discoveries through this account. And the thought of abandoning it now seemed painful.

I was supposed to post something for April Fool's Day. Something like, "I am Leaving This Page For Good". But I didn't have the heart to do so.

So what's up for April? Hmmm I guess I would be traveling more. March was a very busy month as I was also busy working for the final requirements for my CPE (Certificate in Professional Education) in STC.

DESKTOP: Oh, the photo in this post is my current desktop background. It's actually my left hand. This was a test show while waiting for a meeting to start. When I re-checked my photos and found this, i thought of Yotchie: time stops when i'm with you. Nagbinayot na pud ko! Pasensiya nah!

WORK: I had a very busy day covering meetings while attending to different demands to write this letter and that. Ni-topas gyud ko. Pasensiya na lang sa nasingkahan. It was really unintentional. It's just that I don't want to be shove into somehting that I don't understand. And my allergies kept on coming back. I'm off to the nearest pharmacy to buy anti-hestamine.

ALLERGIES: For two weeks now, my allergies kept on coming back.

I am now starting worry about it. I really need to see a doctor within this week.

I tried drinking histacort but it doesn't seem to work.

Mama said that maybe because I am always stressed. Hmmmm well, I guess I can also blame myself for that. But whatever is causing my allergies, I am sure to fight against it. I am proclaiming ALL-OUT-WAR against all the allergies in the world.

I am starting to get paranoid over allergies. I remembered Robin Cook's mysterious symptoms. Am i suffering from something that isn't normal? Did I contract a virus?

For those who shares the same sentiment with me, kindly also share.

Nerdy e-mail about Indie cup of tea

I haven’t written anything like this in a loooooooooooooooooooooong time.

Hey Dennis,

Nice to hear from you again. Haha, I’m guilty of not revisiting you on the music marketing for your bar, I’ve been unreasonably busy. But when I talked to Rocky I actually appreciated some of his choices, and I’ve discovered something new from him too (which is something vintage i.e. 80’s German/Euro Electro-clash-pop). And speaking of Electro-clash-pop and depending genres, I’m really in to it since two or three years ago when I discovered my most favorite Swede-band, who was on the rise then (The Knife) along with them guys from LCD Soundsystem who released their first album in 2005. Plus there’s Thom Yorke, who finally (as expected) made an all electro-album. (a) By the way on Thom Yorke going electro, he just had to go out of control SOLO because people were starting to blame him for Radiohead’s inadvertent shift from their trademark electric guitar rock band to the synthetic but very bop not-everyone-buys-it sound, (b) Radiohead’s new album is a personal favorite because they noticeably LESSENED Thom Yorke’s electronic ambitions in their band by letting him vent it all out on his own & (c) Best part about it, they haven’t broken up. ANYWAY, you don’t want to hear me wax poetic about it but they’re my staple tips to people lately.

Last year, I had PJ Harvey on my playlist - 2007 was her most melancholic album among ALL her melancholic albums. Also listened to some Bjork (2007 - Volta) because I like how she makes an effort to be avante garde all the time, which is always good for innovation. New discoveries: this band called Spiritualized. They claim to be Space Rock but they basically sound like a mild version of Red Sparowes cross-bred with Film School’s deadpan vocals. You might like “Ladies and Gentlemen we’re floating in space”, or their collaboration with Yoko Ono, “Walking on thin ice”. The latter was once Ono’s electronic single which has Lennon legacy all over it. Sigur Ros released their album last year, very good…Wait, I’m giving you a really melancholic lineup. They’re all worth checking out anyway. What genre did you have in mind? If you like Rock, basic(ally), I liked Deerhunter’s new album, it’s very fresh and very Indie(gnified). The New Pornographers are getting more overrated by every album but they’re still worth a shot in small doses… If you listened to Sonic Youth at one point in your life, they released an album last 2006 which I still listen to. And according to a lot of hipsters (who probably heard of them just recently because of Juno), their old track Carpenters rendition of the song “Superstar” is a winner. If you haven’t heard of it, you’ll probably like it. I liked it at first, really, but my ears would bleed if I hear it one more time from some hipster who just watched the movie Juno and came back liking SY and then The Moldy Peaches. Also check out Arcade Fire’s Neon Bible, if you haven’t already and tell me what you think because I’m running a random poll about it.

Sorry I got carried away with the nerd talk there. One last thing: Last year was a great year for Kevin Drew of Broken Social Scene. He collaborated with the same bunch of guys for his solo project, “Spirit if…” Very charged rock and still the same Indie sentimentality you get when artists really want to be profound, lol. It’s scary, it’s been the goal of a lot of these artists lately that I don’t know what to make of it - whether or not it’s still as deviant as Indie. Or maybe I’m getting tired of it. This week, I’m listening to instrumental music again. Post-rock, i.e. Mogwai and The Album Leaf. I don’t know if you’ll be into that since you like Kings of Leon who are unpretentiously rock. I liked half of last year’s album because I haven’t gotten around to listening to everything since I’m in this sort of phase. So far, so good. No dramatic changes really. But for some reason, the Europeans really liked it. It’s one of those albums you listen to over and over again and never get tired.

Oh and yes! Keep me posted about the Cerveza Negra. :-) As it is, there are only two places in Davao City who sell the local Dark Lager: that’s at MTS and this place called “Some place else” at Rizal. I’m really puzzled why not too many people have heard of it when it’s actually San Miguel’s best brew out there. Hola Espana, your bar’s competitor at Damosa, sells Guinness Stout and Murphy’s but they eat through people’s pockets. I seriously hope that people here would open up to the world of great tasting beer. Cerveza’s like a poor man’s alternative haha.

Ciao,
Kim

I’m Sorry I’m Late

Published by ZAM under , 5minutes4mom, Blog

Ultimate Blog Party 2008

I hardly say that because I don't usually come late in parties or gatherings. But today, I come in late to the Ultimate Blog Party at 5minutesformom. (It's March 14 already in the Philippines) . I really don't want to quote that cliche about getting in late now because 80% of the time, I don't agree with it. But today, I'm in the 20% position. Of course, I can come up with lots of excuses but I'll spare everyone with that. I guess what matters most is I'm here. I'm joining.

I'm Mama Meji. Others like to call me ZAM. You can call me that. Or Zenaida. But whatever name you call me, it doesn't matter except for this one word. I work in the telecoms industry. If I'm not working and mothering my two-year old son, I am blogging. I am a certified blogging addict. I also blog in the office (don't tell my boss please).

My other half is someone I'd like to call Houston. He also works in the Engineering field but he's doing designs and works an hour flight away from home. He is actually the reason why I started blogging.

But Houston said, this kid is the reason why I should blog (so he can read updates of our lives and Matt's development).

This is Matt. And he works so hard to make that tummy bulge -asking "Mama, rice, rice, more rice," "I want to eat pleeeaaase" etc... once too often. Eating is really the least of my parenting concern. I'm more concerned with his antics that drive me nuts (which reminds me that I have to blog about how he brought the CR door vent down). But I love my one-kid demolition team so much.

Welcome to my party! Welcome to my life.

And the food and drinks? We can always visit any one of these restos. I'm not being modest if I tell you I'm not really a good cook. That's the truth. But I could make killer salads and few desserts. Wink.
